Teaching and Engagement
Dr. Spies is a tenured associate professor at the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing. Specializing in global health and building capacity in health care providers, she has taught global health and international clinical courses on the graduate level since 2004. Her lectures are informed by her global capacity building endeavors as a researcher, educator, and family nurse practitioner.
Dr. Spies has facilitated Louise Herrington Nursing School faculty and students engagement in diverse initiatives in China, Ethiopia, The Gambia, Hong Kong, India, Peru, Uganda, Vietnam and Zambia. Dr. Spies serves as a member of the ICN NP/APN Network Core Steering Group and as the chair of the ICN Network practice group. In 2021 Dr. Spies was inducted as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. She is a past president of the North Texas Nurse Practitioners and a co-founder of the North Texas African Health Initiative. She has worked actively in Uganda to collaboratively build nurse leadership and research capacity since 2007. She has led faculty and nurse development workshops in Ethiopia, The Gambia, India, Uganda, Vietnam, and Zambia and launched sustainable multifocal collaborations.
The overarching theme of Dr. Spies's research is building capacity in health care providers to address priority population health issues. Recent successful collaborations include leading a task force to strengthen outreach in the Austin Street Center and implementing a collaborative research project in The Gambia with the Baylor College of Medicine. In response to COVID Dr. Spies is collaborating to explore the experiences of Advance Practice Nurses globally as front-line care providers during the pandemic. Dr. Spies's primary ongoing research focus is nurse-led behavior change interventions to improve non-communicable disease outcomes in the African context. Dr. Spies was awarded a 2017-2019 Fulbright Global US Scholar Award. The Fulbright study, A Multinational Collaborative Initiative to Develop Country Specific Nurse Implemented Hypertension Interventions, was implemented in India, Vietnam, and Zambia. Dr. Spies collaborates with multi-disciplinary colleagues to identify sustainable, efficient, and effective responses to global health needs.
