Performance Degree Plans

The Bachelor of Music degree in Performance / Applied Music is a professional degree designed for those who intend to perform in the professional world or who wish to pursue a higher degree and eventually teach and perform at the college/university level.

The Master of Music in Performance is a professional degree designed for those who have successfully completed an undergraduate program and wish to pursue the artistry of teaching and performance at a higher level. Full and partial graduate assistantships are available to qualified applicants.

Graduate Performance Degree Checklists:
Master of Music in Performance - Instrumental Objectives:
  • To provide professional individual instrumental training wherein each student is challenged to develop his or her potential as a performer to the highest degree of excellence.
  • To provide an environment for the development of skills to enable the student to pursue doctoral study, to pursue a teaching career either in schools or as private studio teachers and/or to pursue performing professionally.
  • To provide ample excellent performing opportunities as a soloist, chamber musician and member of large performing ensembles in genres appropriate for the major instrument.
  • To provide classes for the study of the solo and chamber literature in the major area of study and to provide opportunities to demonstrate proper performance practice.
  • To provide knowledge and experience in pedagogical techniques and teaching materials pertinent to the major area of study.
  • To provide opportunities to expand musical knowledge.
Master of Music in Performance - Organ Objectives:
  • To give professional keyboard training wherein each student is challenged to develop his or her potential as a performer to the highest degree of excellence;
  • To expand the student’s combined musical and intellectual comprehension and perception through study in music history and literature, music theory, and the pedagogy of organ;
  • To provide acquaintance with and knowledge of the responsibilities of the church organist;
  • To train organ teachers and performers.
  • To prepare a student for a potential career as a church organist-director.
Master of Music in Performance - Piano Objectives:
  • To provide professional keyboard training wherein each student is challenged to develop his or her potential as a performer to the highest degree of excellence;
  • To expand the student’s combined musical and intellectual comprehension and perception through study in music history and literature, music theory, and the pedagogy of piano;
  • To train piano teachers and performers.
Master of Music in Performance - Vocal Objectives:
  • To create an environment in which the young vocalist can mature artistically;
  • To prepare for doctoral work, opera apprenticeship programs, stage work, and other professional engagements;
  • To provide knowledge and experience in pedagogical techniques for varying performance levels;
  • To provide knowledge and background for performance practice of solo and ensemble literature;
  • To provide an opportunity to extend musical knowledge in music history and literature and music theory.
