The NSF-supported 55th Spring Topology and Dynamics Conference was held on Baylor Campus March 9th through March 12th. This conference series brings together a broad cross-section of topology researchers, featuring sessions on continuum theory, dynamical systems, geometric group theory, geometric topology, and set-theoretic topology. Almost 200 attendees and invited speakers from more than 20 different countries participated in the conference. More information, including abstracts of talks, can be found at the conference webpage.

Baylor hosts 2022 Southwest Local Algebra Meeting (SLAM)
Our Baylor Department of Mathematics hosted the 2022 Southwest Local Algebra Meeting on February 26 and February 27. About 60 participants traveled to Waco to hear leaders in the field of Algebra on their recent research. The speakers were Mirela Çiperiani (UT Austin), Charles Conley (UNT), Ken Goodearl (UC Santa Barbara), Amy Huang (Texas A&M), Jonathan Montaño (NMSU), and our own Manfred Dugas (Baylor). In addition, graduate students from the Southwest region presented their work during poster sessions of the conference.

Dr. David M. Arnold, former Ralph and Jean Storm Chair of Mathematics and a distinguished emeritus professor at Baylor, passed away peacefully at his home on January 3. He was 81 years old.

The conference, entitled

From Operator Theory to Orthogonal Polynomials, Combinatorics, and Number Theory

had to be postponed due to Covid-19 and is expected to take place in May of 2022.

The conference will be organized around topics of analysis including operator and spectral theory, special functions and orthogonal polynomials, and their connections with combinatorics, probability theory, and number theory.

We will also celebrate Lance L. Littlejohn’s accomplishments in helping to build the mathematics department at Baylor University from 2007 until August 1, 2019, when he stepped down as chair.

Undergraduate Math/Physics Major Blake Allan Wins Prestigious Trjitzinsky Memorial Award from AMS
Blake Allan, a senior majoring in mathematics and physics is one of eight winners in the United States of the Waldemar J. Trjitzinsky Memorial Award, which is made possible by a bequest from the estate of Waldemar J., Barbara G., and Juliette Trjitzinsky. The official announcement from the American Mathematical Society of Blake's award was announced on October 17.

Dorina Mitrea Hired as New Chair of Baylor Mathematics
On August 1 2019, Dr. Dorina Mitrea became the new Chair and Professor of the Department of Mathematics at Baylor University. She replaces Dr. Lance Littlejohn who chaired the department from 2007-2019.

Luis Caffarelli, National Academy of Sciences Mathematician, To Visit Baylor October 17-18
Luis Caffarelli, a member of the US National Academy of Sciences, will be the speaker in the thirteenth annual Baylor Lecture Series in Mathematics when he visits Baylor on October 17-18. Professor Caffarelli, the Sid Richardson Foundation Regents Chair at the University of Texas in Austin, is internationally recognized for his fundamental research in mathematics.

Dr. John Ewing, President for Math for America and former Executive Director of the American Mathematical Society, will speak at Baylor University on October 15. His lecture, entitled "Is There An Education Crisis", will be delivered on October 15 at 4:00 pm in the Baylor Sciences Building D110.

Department of Mathematics Installs Wall of Honor to Recognize Donors
On August 15 2019, the Department of Mathematics had a Wall of Honor installed on the third floor of the Sid Richardson Building to recognize its many generous donors. This was a project more than ten years in the making between Baylor's Office of Advancement and the Department of Mathematics.

Marius Mitrea Joins Baylor's Mathematics Faculty
Dr. Marius Mitrea, formerly Professor of Mathematics at the University of Missouri, became a member of the Department of Mathematics on August 1, 2019. He joins his wife, Dorina, who became the new Chair of Baylor's Department of Mathematics.

Joining the math faculty are Dr. Dorina Mitrea, who is the new Chair of the Department, new Full Professor Marius Mitrea, regular lecturers Reeve Hunter and Dana Winters, and Sergio Mayorga, a new post-doctoral fellow.

Mathematicians Luis Caffarelli and Douglas Arnold To Speak in Baylor Lecture Series in Fall 2019
Luis Caffarelli (University of Texas) and Douglas Arnold (University of Minnesota) are the speakers in, respectively, the thirteenth annual Baylor Lecture Series in Mathematics and the twelfth annual Baylor Undergraduate Lecture Series in Mathematics. Both are internationally recognized for their fundamental research in mathematics.

Professor Caffarelli, the Sid Richardson Foundation Regents Chair in Mathematics at the University of Texas in Austin and a member of the National Academy of Sciences, will visit Baylor University on October 17-18. Professor Arnold, the McKnight Presidential Professor of Mathematics at the University of Minnesota, visits Baylor on December 5-6. Each will give two lectures on campus; their public lectures (October 18 and December 5) are suitable for faculty, students, and the general public.
