Mathematics Scholarships

The Department of Mathematics offers tuition assistance scholarships for Baylor students majoring in mathematics, applied mathematics, or mathematics education. Incoming freshmen or transfer students are welcome to apply! Scholarships are also available to University Scholars with a concentration in mathematics. Awards are based on need and/or merit. For the academic year 2022-2023 the department awarded over $150,000 in undergraduate scholarships.

The Earl Nelson Bodine & Maxine Bodine, Max Nelson Bodine & Anita Bodine Williamson Scholarship Fund

The Earl Nelson Bodine & Maxine Bodine, Max Nelson Bodine & Anita Bodine Williamson Scholarship Fund was established in 1977, by Mr. and Mrs. Earl N. Bodine of Grand Prairie, Texas in honor of their children, Anita Louise Williamson and Max N. Bodine. The Bodine family has supported Baylor throughout the years. Mr. Earl Bodine, Mrs. Anita Williamson and Mr. Max Bodine all received their undergraduate degrees from Baylor as did several other family members.

 

Criteria:

• For Undergraduate Mathematics majors.
• Minimum GPA: The University requires a minimum GPA of 2.50.
• Need/Merit: Based on merit.

The Professor Albert Boggess Mathematics Scholarship Fund

Besides being a key figure in the developmental years of Waco University and Baylor University under the leadership of President Rufus C. Burleson, Professor Boggess (1839-1891) was the first chairman of the mathematics department. He taught mathematics, astronomy, and engineering at Baylor University from 1887 to 1891 and was chairman of the Department of Mathematics during that time. Prior to this, he was professor of mathematics at Waco University. This scholarship in his memory was established by his wife and family in 1910 and was announced to the Baylor faculty that year by President Samuel Palmer Brooks. This endowed scholarship fund provides assistance to junior or senior students attending Baylor University, Waco, Texas, majoring in mathematics.

 

Criteria:

• This scholarship is for mathematics majors who are a junior or senior.
• Minimum GPA: The University requires a minimum GPA of 2.50.

The Brian Family Endowed Scholarship in Mathematics

The Brian Family Endowed Scholarship Fund in Mathematics was established in 2011 by W.H., Jr. and Carol Cotter Brian of Amarillo, Texas. Bill Brian earned a B.A. degree and a J.D. degree in 1974 from Baylor University. In 1975 he earned a L.L.M. degree from the Southern Methodist University School of Law. Mr. Brian serves as partner with Courtney, Countiss, Brian and Bailey, L.L.P. in Amarillo. He served on the Baylor University Board of Regents from 1998 through 2007. He is a past member and chair of the board of advisor for the George W. Truett Theological Seminary and has served as chairman of the Panhandle Baylor Major Gifts Task Force. Carol Brian earned a B.A. degree in mathematics from Baylor University in 1973. She serves as the executive assistant to the pastor of First Baptist Church of Amarillo. She is a member of the Baylor University Women's Council of Amarillo and is past president of the Junior League of Amarillo. Criteria: This scholarship is for undergraduate mathematics majors.

The K. L. and Vivian Carter Mathematics Scholarship Fund

The Kenneth L. and Vivian A. Carter Scholarship was established in August 1979 by LTC. Kenneth L. Carter, and his late wife, Vivian A. Carter of Austin, Texas, for the benefit of students studying mathematics.

• For undergraduate mathematics majors.
• Minimum GPA: The University requires a minimum GPA of 2.50.

The Randy and Cathey Hall Endowed Scholarship Fund in Mathematics and Physics

The Randy and Cathey Hall Endowed Scholarship Fund in Mathematics and Physics was established in 2013 by Mr. and Mrs. Hall. Mr. Hall received a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics and Mathematics from Baylor in 1971 and a Master of Science degree in Mathematics from Baylor in 1972. Ms. Hall received a Bachelor of Science in Education degree from Baylor in 1973. They have one daughter, Jessica Hall Janicek, who received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Baylor in 2006 and is an attorney in Southlake, Texas. Mr. Hall was President and CEO of DIGATEX, Inc. in Austin, Texas, a software development company which specialized in route accounting systems for soft drink bottlers and other types of food and beverage distributors. Ms. Hall worked with children in a private psychiatric hospital in Austin, and later was Minister to Children at a large Baptist church in Austin. The Halls returned to Waco in 2008 and Mr. Hall is currently a lecturer at Baylor in the Department of Physics and the Department of Mathematics, and is the supervisor for the undergraduate laboratory program for the Department of Physics.

• Minimum GPA: The University requires a minimum GPA of 2.50.

The Jim and Patricia Hickey Mathematics Endowed Scholarship Fund

The Jim and Patricia Hickey Endowed Scholarship Fund in Mathematics was established in 1997 by Drs. Jim and Pat Hickey. Jim R. Hickey received the Master of Science in mathematics from Baylor University in 1959. Patricia Stanley Hickey received the Bachelor of Arts in 1955 and the Master of Arts from Baylor University in 1960, both degrees in mathematics and education. The Hickeys taught in the mathematics department while graduate students, and as full-time faculty for 31 years. They both retired in 1992, Jim as Emeritus Professor of Mathematics and Pat as Emeritus Associate Professor of Mathematics. Each had a short career in public school teaching and during their Baylor University tenure, taught many pre-service mathematics teachers. Pat's focus was on teacher preparation. This scholarship was established in gratitude and loyalty to Baylor and to assist deserving students in mathematics or mathematics education as a tribute to those former students who made teaching rewarding. Dr. Jim Hickey passed away on March 24, 2005.

 

Criteria:

• For Mathematics 8-12, Mathematics 4-8, or Mathematics majors who are a senior.
• Minimum GPA: 2.80 and recipients must have a 3.0 or higher GPA in math courses.
• Need/Merit: Based on need or merit.

The Jerry Johnson Mathematics Scholarship Fund

The Jerry Johnson Mathematics Scholarship was established in 1982 to benefit students with preference given to students enrolled in the Department of Mathematics on a merit basis.

• Minimum GPA: The University requires a minimum GPA of 2.50.
• Need/Merit: Based on merit.

The John Compere Lattimore Mathematics Scholarship Fund

John Compere Lattimore (1862-1915) began his teaching career, while a student, at Baylor in 1880. His uncle was Albert Boggess, Baylor's first chair of mathematics. He served with distinction and contributed significantly to Baylor University in its early days in Waco. He was Principal of the Preparatory Department at Baylor in 1890. He was elected to chair Baylor's mathematics department in 1892. In 1897, Professor Lattimore became acting President of Baylor University after the resignation of President Burleson. He held this position until 1899 when Oscar Henry Cooper became Baylor's President. The John Compere Lattimore Mathematics Scholarship Fund was established in 1988 by the descendants of John Compere Lattimore with his grandson, John C. Lattimore, as their representative. This endowed scholarship fund provides scholarships for students attending Baylor University at Waco, Texas, majoring in mathematics and based on merit.

The Roy Donald Perry Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund

The Roy Donald Perry Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in 2003 in memory of Roy Donald Perry by Brent and Carole Perry, his son and daughter-in-law, Clara Perry, his spouse, and Dana Perry, his daughter. Roy Donald Perry received a B.A. in mathematics from Baylor University in 1959. He first taught junior high math and then became a teacher at Lee College in Baytown, Texas, where he taught for 30 years. While there, he earned masters and doctoral degrees from the University of Houston. Dr. Perry passed away in 1993. He was a committed Baylor alumnus as a member of the Bear Foundation and lifetime member of the Alumni Association. He and Clara sent both of their children, Brent (B.A. 1986) and Dana (B.A. 1993) to Baylor. This endowed scholarship fund assists deserving students who are enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences and pursuing a major in mathematics or a career of teaching post-secondary education.

The Robert and Veronica K. Piziak Mathematics Endowed Scholarship Fund

The Robert and Veronica K. Piziak Endowed Scholarship Fund in Mathematics was established in 1998 by Robert and Veronica K. Piziak of Troy, Texas. Robert and Veronica Kelly Piziak were born, raised and educated in Massachusetts. Their parents lived through the Depression and World War II and received no formal education. Robert and Veronica met as graduate students; he studied mathematics, and she chose biochemistry. Upon completion of their Ph. D's, they began their professional careers at the University of Florida in Gainesville; he teaching mathematics, she in medical research. After three years, Veronica decided she wanted more patient contact so she attended medical school at the University of Kentucky at Lexington while Robert taught at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky. Upon completing a residency in internal medicine and fellowship in endocrinology, Veronica was invited, in August 1981, to join the staff of Scott and White Clinic and Hospital in Temple, Texas. Robert accepted a temporary position at Baylor University teaching mathematics. That temporary position was later made permanent, and Robert eventually earned tenure. In appreciation of the support received in their own education, they have established this endowed scholarship fund to encourage hard work and accomplishment in the study of mathematics for students enrolled in Baylor Universtiy.

Criteria:

 

• Recipients must have a 3.0 or higher GPA in math courses. For Mathematics 8-12, Mathematics 4-8, or Mathematics majors who are a senior.
• Minimum GPA: 2.80
• Need/Merit: Based on merit.

The Howard and Anita Rolf Endowed Mathematics Scholarship Fund

The Howard and Anita Rolf Endowed Mathematics Scholarship Fund was established by members of the Rolf family, friends, and students of Howard Rolf. Howard L. Rolf served as Professor of Mathematics for 35 years including 26 years as Chair of the Department of Mathematics, retiring in 1997. He and his wife, Anita Ward Rolf, are Baylor University Alumni-By-Choice. Anita Rolf passed away on December 30, 2014. The Rolfs' four children graduated from Baylor University. James Rolf received the B.S. degree in 1985; Jennifer Rolf Dietze, B.B.A., 1986; Stephanie Rolf McClintock, B.S., 1988, and Rhonda Rolf, B.A., 1990. This endowed scholarship fund provides scholarship awards on a merit basis to students who are attending Baylor University and majoring in mathematics.

The Ruth and Gene Royer Mathematics Scholarship Fund

Ruth Boggess Royer, born Ruth Graham Boggess in 1909, was the granddaughter of Albert Boggess, Baylor's first mathematics chairman. Her father, also named Albert Boggess, was President of the Baylor Alumni Association from 1911-1913. The Gene and Ruth Boggess Royer Mathematics Department Endowed Scholarship Fund was established by Gene and Ruth Boggess Royer of Waco, Texas, by provisions in their wills. Mrs. Royer was a 1931 graduate of Baylor University and Mr. Royer is a long time friend of the university. Ruth Boggess Royer died November 5, 1999. This endowed scholarship fund provides assistance to deserving junior or senior students attending Baylor University and majoring in mathematics.

The Schultz-Werba Mathematics Scholarship

The Schultz-Werba Endowed Scholarship Fund in Mathematics was established in 2009 by Timothy C. Schultz of Kingwood, Texas in honor of his family. Timothy Schultz was raised in both Ohio and Texas. His love for numbers began with his grandfather and was cultivated by his parents. He received a B.S. degree in mathematics from Baylor University in 1980. Although he does not currently work in mathematics, he believes its foundation in rigorous thinking and problem solving has served him well in his work. The Schultz-Werba Endowed Scholarship is a tribute to Timothy's grandfather, Ralph E. Werba, and his parents, Carl and Grace Schultz.

• Criteria: For undergraduate mathematics majors from Ohio.
• Minimum GPA: The University requires a minimum GPA of 2.50.
• Need/Merit: Based on merit.

The Beth Wilson Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund

The Beth Wilson Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in 2016 by Barbara G. and G. Samuel Wilson, Jr. of Richardson, Texas, in memory of their daughter, Elizabeth "Beth" Wilson. Beth was born June 22, 1983 and transitioned to heaven on March 15, 2015. Her two sons, Derek and Brendan, were the delight of her life. Beth was a child of breathtaking intelligence who learned to read at age 3, devoured chapter books before kindergarten and was part of the RISD REACH program in elementary school. She followed a perfect score on the PSAT with a perfect score on the SAT and casually remarked that "it was easy." Beth earned her Gold Award in Girl Scouts and was a member of an award winning Odyssey of the Mind/Destination Imagination team from second grade to her senior year. Beth graduated in the top 10 at Berkner High School in 2001 as a National Merit Scholar. She was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, graduated summa cum laude from Baylor University as a University Scholar with a concentration in mathematics and earned a masters in math from University of Wisconsin, Madison. Beth played cello beautifully in the Berkner and Baylor orchestras, the Shawnee Community Orchestra and in church music programs. She was a strong Christian and an active church member. G. Samuel Wilson, Jr. earned a B.S. degree magna cum laude from Baylor University in 1978 and an M.A. degree from Washington University in 1980. Sam works for Raytheon as a principle network security engineer. Barbara G. Wilson earned a B.S. degree magna cum laude from Baylor University in 1978. She is an associate faculty member in the Department of Developmental Math at Collin College in Plano, Texas. Sam and Barbara reside in Richardson, Texas. Their family also includes son, Jonathan (B.A. '07) and daughter, Kathryn (B.F.A '14). The Wilsons are members of the Baylor Old Main Society.
