AirBear 2.4 / 5.2 GHz

Baylor University's Information Technology Services (ITS) department currently runs a campus wide wireless network. The network allows students and faculty to access network resources wirelessly from many locations on campus. The wireless network, known as AIRBEAR, uses the IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n standards in the 2.4/5.2 GHz radio frequencies to transmit data. These frequencies are in the Industrial/Scientific/Medical (ISM) and military bands. As a result of the limited frequency spectrum available for wireless networks, Baylor has implemented an airspace policy. The policy is to help insure the quality and reliability of the AIRBEAR network.

There are many devices that utilize the 2.4/5.2 GHz radio frequencies. Items may include but are not limited to cordless telephones, speakers, cameras, and networking devices including consumer wireless access points. New devices are released regularly that also utilize the 2.4/5.2 GHz frequencies. ITS reserves the right to control and restrict the operation of all devices using the 2.4/5.2 GHz bands within University property. Devices that utilize the 2.4/5.2 GHz frequencies and are necessary for instructional or research applications will be handled through ITS. Faculty can consult with ITS to determine a way of utilizing the device for education while not interfering with the AIRBEAR network.

The AIRBEAR network will be regularly monitored for interference. Any source of interference will be identified and the owners of that equipment will be contacted. Students will be handled according to Section IV of the Student Disciplinary Policy. ITS can be contacted to help determine if a device utilizes the 2.4/5.2 GHz frequencies.
