About J.M. Dawson Institute of Church-State Studies

Located at Baylor University since 1957, the J.M. Dawson Institute of Church-State Studies is dedicated to the support, study, and research of church-state relations. The Dawson Institute does this by hosting lectures, symposia, and meetings. The J.M. Dawson Institute also cooperates readily with other Baylor entities such as the Baylor Department of Religion, The Journal of and Church & State, the Keston Center for Religion, Politics, and Society, and the Baptist Studies Center for Research.

WACO—Public schools in the United States offer the “meeting place for widening diversity” where students learn to live with others who hold different views, a Baptist preacher and advocate for public education told a Baylor University gathering. Charles Foster Johnson, executive director of Pastors for Texas Children, addressed “Religious Liberty, the Public School and the Soul of America” at the G. Hugh and Beverly C. Wamble Symposium, presented by Baylor’s J.M. Dawson Institute for Church-State Studies.
WACO, Texas (April 2, 2019) – Baylor University is mourning the passing of James E. Wood Jr., Ph.D., a world-renowned expert on religious liberty and church-state and inaugural director of Baylor University’s J.M. Dawson Center for Church-State Studies. Dr. Wood died March 24 at the age of 96.
WACO, Texas (March 8, 2019) – Chief Judge Maurice Foley of the United States Tax Court in Washington, D.C., will present “His Glory, My Story” at the 2019 Dawson Wamble Spring Symposium on Tuesday, March 19.
