About THI

The Texas Hunger Initiative (THI) is a capacity building project within the Baylor University Center for Family and Community Ministries and a partner of the BGCT Christian Life Commission that seeks to develop and implement strategies to alleviate hunger through policy, education, community organizing and community development.

Hunger is defined by the 2007 Hunger Almanac produced by Feeding America to be the "uneasy or painful sensation caused by lack of food, the recurrent or involuntary lack of access to food."

  • 1.3 million Texans experience this daily
  • 14.8% of Texans are hungry or food insecure, only Mississippi and New Mexico have higher rates in the United States
  • Many of the 3 million children in Texas who participate in the free lunch program go without a meal on the weekends while schools are closed

THI seeks to see Texas become a food secure state by 2015. Food security is defined by the 2007 Hunger Almanac to be "access by all people at all times to enough food for an active healthy life."

THI will convene federal, state, and local government departments which have a stake in food security in Texas with stake holding non-governmental organizations and local providers to develop a plan for an efficient use and delivery of our current resources to hungry individuals and families.
