Observing MLK Day at Baylor

#Baylor students observed Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day via service and solemnity. During the day, students volunteered with the Urban Gardening Coalition (including work at the Baylor Community Garden at 9th Street & Bagby). Then in the evening, they joined with the Waco community for a candlelight vigil in MLK Park, on the east side of the Suspension Bridge.

A Lesson on Comedy: Professor Discusses Racial Joke Sensitivity

Samuel Perry, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Honors College’s Baylor Interdisciplinary Core program, met with members of the Waco Community to discuss the effects of laughing at culturally and racially sensitive jokes. The meeting was hosted by the Community Race Relations Coalition. “Comedy provides a way to talk about things that remain difficult to understand,” Perry said. He hoped his presentation would help make the community more empathetic about the presence of race relations in humor. Software company Extensis has announced it will host a webcast with Baylor University representatives on Jan. 27 to discuss how Baylor became the sixth most influential university on Instagram and the university’s usage of digital asset management to triple their social media engagement figures. Baylor University Director of Photography Robbie Rogers and Assistant Director of Photography Matthew Minard will share some of Baylor’s solutions for getting high-quality photos and the importance of photography in social media. A live Q&A with Rogers and Minard will follow the presentation.
