Dec. 1, 2016 James Roberts, Ph.D., The Ben H. Williams Professor of Marketing in the Hankamer School of Business, penned this column about smartphone use and its effects on relationships. Roberts references a study he co-authored with Baylor colleague Meredith David, Ph.D., assistant professor of marketing, which measured "phubbing" or "phone snubbing." Roberts wrote: "Something as seemingly innocent as using a smartphone in the presence of a romantic partner undermined the quality of the relationship. This can create a domino effect: As our study also showed, when we’re not happily in love, we are also less likely to be satisfied, overall, with life. We’re also more likely to report that we are depressed."
