"Bear the Burden" to Support Tsunami Victims

Baylor University Student Government today announced the start of "Bear the Burden," a campaign to raise $50,000 by Feb. 7 to send to the disaster relief efforts in Asia. The campaign will begin Friday, Jan. 7, and will run for one month.

Jeff Leach, Baylor Student Body President and Chair of the "Bear the Burden" campaign, said, "Baylor Bears have always risen to the occasion to help people in need and now is no exception. Through this campaign we have an incredible opportunity to help save and rebuild lives in Asia." Student leaders will solicit donations from the Baylor family as well as the Central Texas community. All Baylor constituencies including students, faculty, staff and alumni will be notified of the online giving options through mass e-mails to be sent out on Friday.

A web site has been set up to accept online donations at www.baylor.edu/burden.

Leach, along with other student leaders, will present a check of all of the funds raised by the Baylor family to Samaritan's Purse International Relief on Monday, Feb. 7. Samaritan's Purse is a nondenominational evangelical Christian organization providing spiritual and physical aid to hurting people around the world. Samaritan's Purse is focusing their operations in Sri Lanka and Indonesia with plans to distribute over 1 million water purification packets and 700 plastic tarps for temporary shelter, as well as supporting numerous other relief efforts in over 10 countries.
