Message from the Chair
On behalf of the faculty, staff and students in the Department of Statistical Science, I want to welcome you to our website. The faculty and staff in the Department are committed to providing our undergraduate and graduate students with an excellent diversified educational experience. Our faculty prides itself on being outstanding teachers and mentors while striving to maintain scholarly productivity that is at the cutting edge of research in statistics and biostatistics.
Statistics and Biostatistics are exciting and challenging disciplines that have proven to be of great value in many diverse areas of our modern society. Our graduates have found themselves to be very competitive in obtaining employment in academia, the private sector and in government. Our graduate students have access to a variety of practicum areas while being fully supported for their graduate studies. Currently, the practicum range from teaching, traditional TA duties in addition to being a teacher of record for an undergraduate statistics service course, consulting and providing statistical assistance for several areas within the university, and external research opportunities with institutions, such as, Scott and White Hospital, Baylor Medical Health Services, and the Veterans Administration Hospital. More recently our third and fourth year students have found funding opportunities with government agencies and national research laboratories. We currently have students supported by the FDA and Los Alamos National Laboratory.
The department recently revised the exam structure within our doctoral program with the intended objective of enabling and encouraging our students to begin their research projects at the end of the second year in the program. We have been pleased with the results of this change and the students begin working on problems that are often motivated by real world and current research problems. Our relationship with the institutions listed above and other companies from the private sector have afforded the faculty and students with numerous real world problems and supportive data. These resources have proven of great value in increasing the quality and timeliness of our graduate student research projects. The students often present their results at national and regional meetings thereby equipping them with the skills and experiences needed to be competitive in today's job market.
As you browse through our departmental website, we trust that you will get a feel for our commitment and dedication to our work. If what you read sounds exciting, we encourage you to apply. If you have questions, we encourage you to contact us.
