Master's Degree in Athletic Training

The Department of Health, Human Performance and Recreation offers a post-professional master's degree in athletic training. The Graduate Athletic Training Education Program (GATEP) is for entry level professionals who are BOC certified or eligible to sit for the examination. The mission of the program is to educate athletic trainers in the orthopedic rehabilitation and reconditioning of individuals across the lifespan and to prepare them to function as educators, researchers, administrators and practitioners using current evidence based literature in order to make best practice decisions.

Curriculum

The MSEd degree in Athletic Training is a 36 hour program with 24 hours in the athletic training core, 6 hours of research and statistics, 3-6 hours of either a thesis or research project, and 0-3 hours of restricted electives with a comprehensive examination at the end of the program. Students learn theoretical relationships from didactic courses and laboratory and research skills from thorough hands on experience gained from the Athletic Training & Human Anatomy Lab, Baylor Laboratories for Exercise Science & Technology, and Exercise Biochemical Nutrition Lab. Graduate teaching and clinical assistantships are available through the Dept. of HHPR and at a number of on campus and off campus clinical sites for students with the necessary qualifications and experience.
