Philosophy:
Having come from a family of professional educators, and spending my entire professional career in education my philosophy of teaching has been strongly established yet still continues to develop. When considering the traditional philosophies of education, I tend to be somewhat eclectic. I most closely align my views with pragmatism, but also draw from idealism, and naturalism. I am pragmatic in my approach to teaching in that I firmly believe in learning by doing. All of my teaching involves practical application projects and assignments. I also find great educational value in creating professional contacts within the sport industry within the class setting. I am also pragmatic in my desire to influence students through the educational process in order for these individuals to make a societal impact. In addition to creating skilled professionals for the sport industry, I also see the need to prepare my students to make a greater impact in their communities. From the idealist philosophy, I embrace the emphasis on moral and spiritual values as well as the key role of the teacher as a role model and example. From the naturalistic philosophy I strongly relate to the importance of individual development and on the strong connection to nature and natural laws.

In considering the professional challenges of this role at Baylor, I have ample previous experience that have allowed me to rapidly transition and make a robust professional contribution to the sport management program.

At the collegiate level I have worked now worked at five different institutions. I taught as a graduate assistant at both New Mexico Highlands University in pursuit of my master's degree, and I taught at the University of New Mexico while completing my doctoral program. These introductory teaching experiences at the collegiate level served me well when I transitioned to my first full time professorate at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa. During my five years at Loras, I led the undergraduate sport management program, and I taught a wide variety of courses at both the graduate and undergraduate level. I also furthered my academic administrative leadership development by being elected to serve as the first chair of the newly formed Division of Physical Education and Sport Studies. I invested five years at Ball State University teaching both graduate and undergraduate courses. At Ball State I have greatly increased my productivity as a researcher in gaining internal and external research and project funding as well as writing and presenting. My Ball State experience has served to more fully develop my skills in all areas of scholarship in order to transition to my next professional step at Baylor University.

In addition to my collegiate experience I served as both a teacher and administrator at the interscholastic level. This includes teaching 7-12 grade science at Cliff School in Cliff, New Mexico, teaching science, drafting, and old at McCurdy School in Espanola, New Mexico, and teaching summer school physical education at Los Alamos High School. At the administrative level I served McCurdy School as Director of Student Services and Athletic Director for two years after completing my master's degree. I additionally served as the chair of District 1AA of the New Mexico Activities Association while AD at McCurdy. After completing my doctoral coursework, I began a three-year tenure as Athletic Director of the Los Alamos Public Schools. In this role I supervised the athletic program of the entire school district as well as being involved in curriculum development and teacher supervision and evaluation. While at Los Alamos I also served as chair of District 2AAA leading 7 schools in championship play and post-season tournaments. These administrative experiences have added greatly to my philosophical perspective in the teaching of future leaders in the sport industry.

My teaching and administrative experience combined with my established teaching philosophy helps to demonstrate my ability to contribute to the Baylor Sport Management Program.
