Dissertation Defense

Robbins Chapel Windws

The purposes of the Dissertation and its defense are: 1) to determine whether Ph.D. program candidates have successfully mastered the learning outcomes of the program and can integrate them into an original piece of scholarship, 2) to assess whether candidates have mastered the process of academic inquiry sufficiently enough to produce a high-quality project that makes an original contribution to the knowledge base in a specialized field, 3) to provide a culminating experience for Ph.D. candidates that requires them to integrate all the knowledge they have gained while completing the program, 4) to require Ph.D. candidates to express their dissertation research in a clear, coherent, and precise manner, and 5) to provide faculty with a final opportunity to evaluate whether or not the candidate meets all of the expectations of the Ph.D. degree program.
