SOE Faculty and Graduate Students Present at NAGC Conference
Faculty and graduate students from the Baylor School of Education (SOE) presented research at the annual conference of the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC), held Nov. 12-15 in Phoenix. Two sessions focused on the recent book co-authored by SOE professor Dr. Susan Johnsen, Using the National Gifted Education Standards for Teacher Preparation, Second Edition, and two sessions presented research from the SOE’s summer gifted enrichment program, University for Young People (UYP), directed by senior lecturer Dr. Mary Witte.
Dr. John Park Receives Posthumous Awards
The late Dr. John C. Park, associate professor in the School of Education from 2012 until he passed away in June, was recently honored with posthumous awards by national organizations in science teaching. The School Science and Mathematics Association (SSMA) awarded Park the George C. Mallinson Distinguished Service Award, the SSMA’s highest award recognizing notable and extensive service. Park is also being honored by the National Technology Leadership Initiative, the National Science Teachers Association and the North Carolina Science Teachers Association.
Baylor School of Education Dean, Dr. Michael McLendon, Appointed to State Commission
SOE dean, Dr. Michael K. McLendon, is among 15 state education leaders appointed to the Texas Commission on Next Generation Assessments and Accountability. The newly created commission is tasked with developing and making recommendations for new systems of student assessment and public school accountability no later than Sept. 1, 2016. "I'm honored to be able to serve Texas by advising our state's elected leaders on how best to design future systems of educational assessment and accountability affecting both K-12 and higher education," McLendon said. "The stakes for Texas, for its people and for its economy have never been greater."
Young SOE Alum Gives TED Talk
You’re familiar with the Golden Rule: treat others how you’d want to be treated. But what if we flipped that and treated ourselves how we treat others? Recent Baylor School of Education alumna and current graduate student Lauren Bagwell, BSED ’15, explored this idea in a TED Talk she gave last month at SMU. UT’s Dr. Uri Treisman to Lecture on Education Topics
Dr. Uri Treisman, professor of mathematics and public affairs at the University of Texas, will deliver two lectures at Baylor on important topics in education — math education and the “mindset” movement. Treisman will speak Friday, Nov. 13, at 10:30 a.m. in Marrs McLean Science Building 101, as part of Baylor’s BRIC Foundations lectures. The presentation on mathematics education is titled “The Architecture of Intensification: Rethinking Remediation in K-12 and Postsecondary Mathematics Education.”
