Texas Private School Teachers and Administrators Gather at Baylor
From an inspirational message by a state legislator to hands-on curriculum training, the annual Texas Private Schools Conference hosted at the Baylor School of Education on July 9 had a lot to offer. Rep. Scott Turner of Rockwall shared his personal life story, a journey that led him through playing in the NFL to his current role as an elected Texas state representative from Rockwall.
“Teachers and coaches are my heroes,” Turner said, referring to the impact of educational leaders in his life.
Two SOE Grads Featured in Wacoan Magazine
Having a degree in education can make you a better parent, according to a couple of SOE grads. That’s what Baylor School of Education alumni Aaron Pena, BSEd ’97, and Patricia Avila Pena, BSEd ’96, said in a story for the June 2014 edition of the Wacoan Magazine. The couple and their three children were pictured on the cover and in a Q&A story inside.

The Baylor School of Education wrapped up science, social science, fine arts and technology summer programs for gifted and talented students. SOE’s Center for Community Learning and Enrichment houses University for Young People (UYP), which hosts programs for first through twelfth-grade students. First through fourth-grade students attend camps at Hillcrest PDS and Woodway Elementary, and fourth through twelfth-grade students stay on the Baylor University campus.
SOE Dean Jon Engelhardt Announces Retirement
Dr. Jon Engelhardt, dean of the Baylor School of Education, has announced his intent to retire next year. Engelhardt, who became dean in July of 2007, is also a professor of Curriculum and Instruction. Concluding his 27th year as a dean, seven at Baylor, Engelhardt said, “I like to say I saved the best for last in coming to Baylor.”
SOE Grad Awarded Big 12 Post-Graduate Scholarship
Recent School of Education graduate Kat Ludlow was a recipient of the Big 12's Dr. Prentice Gautt Postgraduate Scholarship. Recipients must be athletes who are high academic achievers and plan to continue in a graduate or professional school. Ludlow was a Health Science Studies Pre-Physical Therapy major in the Department of Health, Human Performance and Recreation and plans to attend UT Southwestern for physical therapy.
