AUDIO: Radio interview in Seattle with sociology researcher Todd Ferguson, co-author of a Baylor study which found that counties with more natural amenities, such as mountains, waterfronts and forests, have lower rates of church attendance. Some people who feel they connect with the divine through nature may not feel the need be affiliated with religious organizations, with religious groups in effect competing with nature. (Terry Goodrich, assistant director of Baylor Media Communications, pitched this research nationally. She covers sociology research and faculty.)

U.S. counties with nicer weather and prettier natural surroundings see lower rates of religious affiliation, according to a Baylor study published in the journal Sociology of Religion. Quoted is Todd Ferguson, a doctoral candidate in sociology in Baylor’s College of Arts & Sciences. Because some people use nature as a spiritual resource, it may be a competitor with religious organizations, he said. (Terry Goodrich, assistant director of Baylor Media Communications, pitched and placed this story. She covers sociology research and faculty.)

A study by researchers at Baylor, the University of Chicago and the University of Southern California found little evidence that multiracial congregations promote progressive racial views among attendees of any race or ethnicity. Inside those congregations, views of blacks became more similar to those of whites’ explanations for inequality: personal motivation rather than discrimination. Quoted is Kevin Dougherty, Ph.D., associate professor of sociology in Baylor’s College of Arts & Sciences. (Terry Goodrich, assistant director of Baylor Media Communications, pitched this story nationally. She covers sociology research and faculty.)
