REGISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR CURRENT STUDENTS

The Program Manager for Graduate Studies conducts Academic Advising for the purposes of creating and maintaining an educational plan that helps students identify and register for social work courses. Students are referred to their Faculty Mentor for professional development questions.

Advisement is recommended but not required for registration. You might find it helpful to download your suggested degree plan template and map out your plan for fulfilling the requirements of your degree on the spreadsheet. Links to course descriptions and syllabi are available from the MSW Degree Requirements webpage. If you have questions regarding professional development and choice of electives please contact your faculty mentor.

BearWeb Student Registration Instructions and other registration resources are available on Baylor’s Registration website.

BearWeb Early Registration Schedule
  • Students’ specific registration times will be available via BearWeb registration under "registration status."
  • Students are encouraged to register at the designated time and date they are assigned. Registration times are assigned according to how many graduate hours you have completed. Students who have completed more coursework are able to register earlier.

Holds

All students new to the university since Summer 2016 received a registration hold, which will prevent them from registering for Summer or Fall 2017 courses. This hold is in place to ensure that students new to the university receive essential information and meet Title IX compliance requirements. Students who have been enrolled at Baylor prior to Summer 2016 did not and will not receive a registration hold. However, all students are still encouraged to complete this training to learn important information about the role of Title IX. For questions about holds, contact the Registrar’s Office, at 254-710-1181 or Registrar@baylor.edu.

Holds will prevent you from registering. If you are unable to register due to holds, you must resolve these holds with the Registrar’s Office or the Cashier’s Office before proceeding.

Course Numbering System

The numbers applied to each course indicate level, semester hours of credit, and departmental codes. The first digit in the number indicates the level. A 4000-level course does not confer graduate credit unless it appears in this catalog, Graduate Program section, or the Graduate or Truett Catalog. The second digit in the number indicates the value in graduate credit hours. Thus, “3” as a second digit indicates three credit hours. The last two digits are reserved for departmental use.

Variable Hour Courses

Any course with a "V" in the title (for example, SWO 5V70) may be set up as a fixed-hour or variable hour course. If the course is not set up for a fixed number of credit hours, it will default to one hour in the registration system. You must then manually select the number of hours for which you intend to register. Log into BearWeb and select Student Academic Services/Registration/Change Variable Hours and follow the instructions.

You can register online through BearWeb for only one 5V70 course per term. For each subsequent 5V70 course, you’ll need to complete an add/drop form and take it to the registrar’s office.

Course Load

The maximum number of semester hours for which a Social Work master’s student may register in a given semester is 18. No more than 9 MSW course semester hours may be taken in either of the two summer sessions. Complete the Petition form--Course Overload to request an exception.

Registering for Truett Courses

Social work students who have not been admitted to Truett Seminary cannot register for Seminary courses online through BearWeb. Please download and complete an Add/Drop form. You’ll then need to take it (or scan and email) to Truett_Academic_Advising@baylor.edu for signature and further instructions.
