We hope this is helpful as you learn more about the School and its traditions.

2012 Family Dinner Photos and Videos

Advanced Standing
A graduate degree option for students who have earned an undergraduate degree in social work from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education resulting in completion of the MSW degree in a shorter period of time.


All-School Meeting
The Dean calls together faculty, staff and students to a joint meeting within the first two weeks of the fall and spring semesters.


Field Luncheon 09

Annual Field Luncheon
Each spring, the School recognizes Field Education by honoring the field instructors, task supervisors, field liaisons and students with a luncheon where a number of student and professional awards are presented. (Business dress)


Back to School Kick-off Lunch
Students, faculty and staff gather each fall to enjoy food, fun and friends. The meal is usually potluck, provided by faculty and staff. (Casual dress)


Board of Advocates
The Board of Advocates consists of 29 members from across the country who bring a variety of professional, social, institutional and denominational experience to the work of the School. They serve voluntarily out of their commitment and passion to further the impact of social work students who serve the neediest population groups throughout the world with both professionalism and Christian love. The Board meets quarterly with the School administration to hear reports from the Dean and to convene in committees to address curriculum, donor, administrative and center-related issues. An MSW and BSW student are named as ad-hoc members of the BOA each year.


Capstone
The Capstone course is required of all graduating BSW and MSW students.

  • The BSW Capstone consists of a weekly seminar that focuses on the preparation and presentation of a professional portfolio of learning that is reflective of the social work curriculum, and on the entry of students into the social work profession.

  • The MSW Capstone consists of two weeks of four hours of class daily focusing on integration and synthesis of the major themes and objectives of the MSW program and on collegial consultation in preparation of a professional presentation delivered to the practice community.


Community Connection
This is a quarterly publication of the School that goes to alumni, donors, Board of Advocates members, faculty and staff, and friends of the School. Copies are available to students at the School and on the School's website.


Dyer Workshop 2010

Convocation
On the day preceding Baylor University's commencement exercises in May, August and December, the School of Social Work holds a Convocation ceremony to recognize and honor its graduates. More intimate and much smaller than Baylor's commencement, this event is a joyous celebration with family and friends of our student's academic accomplishments. (Business dress)


Dyer Ethics Workshop
Held annually in the fall, the workshop features a guest speaker who addresses ethical situations in social work practice. Open to the community and students, the workshop provides CEU credit for professionals. It is named in honor of Professor Emeritus Preston Dyer of the School. (Business dress)

Fall Worship Service

Family Dinner
Not just another banquet, but more like a family reunion, this spring event celebrates another successful academic year where students, faculty, staff, BOA members and other friends enjoy a catered meal and presentations by student award recipients, and the School of Social Work Alumni of the Year. Grace Table
An undertaking of the School's NASW-Baylor chapter, the Grace Table is located in the School's Student Lounge and provides light snacks for students to help nourish them throughout their busy days.


Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration
A collaborative effort with Truett Seminary and the Religion Department, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Celebration includes a rally (on Speight Plaza) beginning at 5:30 p.m., a candlelight walk from Speight Plaza to Miller Chapel in the Tidwell Bible Building, a Chapel Service at 6:00 p.m. in Miller Chapel, and concludes with a reception, immediately following the Chapel Service, in the BoBo Spiritual Life Center. The 1.5 hr. Chapel Service, in the past, has featured students (serving as greeters; and giving the welcome, prayer scripture, the occasion, acknowledgements and benediction). The chapel service message is given by a prominent local pastor from the African-American community with the church choir providing music. At least one additional Chapel Service program activity (e.g. spoken word, youth praise team, or featured local singer) has been included. The Baylor University community, Waco and the surrounding communities are invited to attend.


Homecoming Reception
Homecoming festivities with the Baylor School of Social work begin with a come-and-go reception on the Friday before the football game in the second floor Living Room of the SSW building. All alumni, current students and their families are invited to come by for fellowship, refreshments, to reconnect with former professors and for a tour of the building.


MSW Practice Colloquium
As the culmination of the Capstone course, MSW candidates present their practice and research projects on a wide range of topics relevant to the social work profession. As many as 60 present in the all-day event each spring that is open to the public and provides CEU credit for professionals. (Business dress)


School of Social Work Student Organization
In this organization, students have the opportunity to coordinate their interests and act cooperatively on behalf of all social work students and those they serve. The group meets at least monthly. The School of Social Work Student Organization officers are representatives from both the graduate and undergraduate programs.


Phi Alpha 2012

Phi Alpha Honor Society
The Baylor School of Social Work has a chapter of the national Phi Alpha Honor Society. The purpose of Phi Alpha is to provide a closer bond among students of social work and promote humanitarian goals and ideals. It fosters high standards of education for social workers and invites into membership those who have excelled in scholarship and achievement in social work. Must meet requirements.


Photo Wall of Graduates
Group photos of each graduating cohort are taken and placed on the School's Photo Wall, a popular gathering spot each year at the Homecoming Reception.


Student Awards Brunch
On the May weekend of Convocation and Commencement, the Dean hosts student award recipients and their families at a special luncheon. (Business dress)


Student Representatives
Students have a rare opportunity in academic circles to participate in the School's academic, curricular and Board of Advocates committees, providing an important voice in the School's decision-making process. Students may indicate interest in committee service at the beginning of the academic year to their associate dean.


The Voice E-newsletter
The School of Social Work e-mails a newsletter every Monday to faculty, staff, students and pre-social work students with notices regarding academic, social, and events information. Submit your notices to The Voice by 5 p.m. on the Friday previous to the Monday it will be sent.
