History and Summary

In 1994, Diana Garland designed an assessment tool to help church leaders understand and minister more effectively with families in their congregations, at the request of congregations with whom she was consulting. It has been revised eight times (including the most recent revision in 2013) to reflect the input of congregational leaders who have used the instrument.

There are six key areas that the Church Census measures:

• Demographics of families

• The stresses families experience

• What makes families strong

• How families practice their faith

• What families say they want from their congregations

• How families are living their faith in service
