Student Court

Student Court is the judicial branch of Student Government. It is composed of nine justices and two court clerks. All justices are appointed in accordance with the Student Body Constitution. This entails selection by the Student Body President and then approval by a majority vote of the Student Senate. Each justice serves a term of two (undergraduate) academic years or until his or her graduation from Baylor University.

Student Court interprets the official documents of Student Government and settles disputes among students and organizations. It also hears appeals concerning Baylor traffic tickets issued on campus. The Court works closely with the administration of the university - Student Life, Parking Services, and Judicial Affairs.

Jurisdiction of the Court

Original jurisdiction of the Student Court shall include controversies arising over:

o Interpretation of the constitution, amendments, and all signed legislation.
o Disputes and controversies involving:
Student(s) against an organization; An organization against a student(s); An organization against an organization, providing that the organizations in question do not both fall under the jurisdiction of Inter-fraternity Council, Pan-Hellenic, or any other court recognized by the administration; Student(s) against a student(s), at the discretion of the Vice President for Student Life not involving subject matter that falls under the jurisdiction of the Baylor Honor Council.
o Charges of violations of the constitution, constitutional amendments, or other legislation passed by Senate and signed into law.
o Traffic violations issued by the Baylor Parking Services to a Baylor student.
o Cases that are referred by staff appointed by the Vice President for Student Life regarding non-policy indiscretions on the part of a student or organization.

Appellate jurisdiction of the Student Court shall include substantive or procedural controversies arising over:

o All commissions, committees, and boards created by Student Government.
o Decisions of the following judicial bodies: Inter-fraternity Council, Pan-Hellenic Council, Electoral Commission, other courts and organizations recognized by the administration, disputes or controversies involving a student(s) against a student(s) at the discretion of the Associate Dean of Judicial Affairs, but in no case may such disputes or controversies involve subject matter that falls under the jurisdiction of the honor code, or the Baylor University disciplinary procedure.
