RUS 1401--BEGINNING RUSSIAN IAn introductory course to Russian language and culture. Students concentrate on fundamental grammar and pronunciation. Students develope communication with Russian through conversation and reading of texts. Russian: Stage One, Vol. I is the required textbook which includes audio cassette, video, and workbook.
RUS 1402--BEGINNING RUSSIAN II
A continuation of the first semester Russian course. Basic Russian through conversation and vocabulary building. Text is Russian: Stage One, Vol. II. Includes video, audio cassette, and workbook. By the end of the semester, students will have acquired basic conversational skills to meet everyday situations. In addition, students will gain insight into basic elements of current Russian culture.
RUS 2310--INTERMEDIATE RUSSIAN I
Focus on increasing conversation skills in the context of everyday situations. Includes a comprehensive review of the Russian case and verb systems. The required textbook is

RUS 3301--RUSSIAN CONVERSATION AND COMPOSITION
Major emphasis is given to advanced grammar and its use in conversation, along with idiomatic expressions and subtleties within the language. Proficiency in all areas of Russian is developed through increased exposure to more complex forms of conversation, composition, and reading. Text is Advanced Russian by Nakhimovsky and Lead.
RUS 3302--RUSSIAN READING DEVELOPMENT
A continuation of RUS 3301, Russian Conversation and Composition. Text is Advanced Russian by Nakhimovsky and Leed. Emphasis continues on development and practice of conversation skills, and vocabulary building. Reading proficiency is developed through a variety of literary texts, including Russian folk genres--chastushki (Russian limericks) and skazki (fairy tales)--a short story in which satirist Mikhail Zoshchenko sheds light on the Russian sauna
RUS 4301--RUSSIAN LITERATURE 9th to 19th CENTURY
This survey of Russian literature begins with works of the Old Russian period and continues through the movements and works of the 19th century. Students will read monuments of Russian litrature such as the Igor Tale, selected Russian byliny, short works by Pushkin, Lermontov, and Gogol.
RUS 4302--20th CENTURY RUSSIAN LITERATURE
A trip through Russia's literary past. Begins with the literary climate immediately following the bolshevik revolution of 1917. Proceeds through the Stalin, Khrushchev, and Cold War eras, and into the post-Soviet Union era. Readings include works by Zoshchenko, Zamyatin, Bulgakov, Akhmatova, Shvarts, Pasternak, Solzhenitsyn among others.
