The criminal conviction of former student-athlete Sam Ukwuachu, in August 2015, prompted the University to set in motion a thorough examination of Baylor's response to sexual assault and dating violence. The resulting findings provided a road map for improvement.
Background

In Fall 2015, Baylor University’s Board of Regents engaged outside counsel to conduct an independent and external review of Baylor’s institutional response to Title IX and related compliance issues through the lens of specific cases.

Findings Announced May 26, 2016

Baylor's Board of Regents acted upon the findings of the Pepper Hamilton investigation into the school's handling of cases of sexual violence. The Board announced significant changes in personnel and took additional actions for Baylor to improve its processes, establish accountability and support the safety and welfare of former, current and future students.

Progress and Updates

As the University makes improvements to processes, policies, infrastructure, communication, training, partnerships and response to reports of sexual violence, that information is released via a progress report and other communications.

Sexual Assault Task Force

The Sexual Assault Task Force is building on improvements to the University response to sexual violence made in recent years and is acting to address recommendations in the areas of Title IX protocols and policies, athletics, engagement and education, centralized reporting and resolution, public safety and counseling and advocacy, as well as other areas across the University. This task force is supported by members of Baylor’s faculty, staff, student body and administration.

Spiritual Life Task Force

The Spiritual Life and Character Formation Task Force focuses on spiritual life and the cultivation of character across the University and will provide long-term strategic direction for the renewed focus on the distinctive mission of the University, “to educate men and women for worldwide leadership and service by integrating academic excellence and Christian commitment within a caring community.”
