Staff Job Descriptions


Editorial staff

  • Read submitted essays and prepare detailed written evaluations.
  • Participate in making final decision for inclusion based on evaluations.
  • Work one-on-one with authors to handle revisions/corrections.
  • Proofread final manuscripts.
  • Write or edit copy for website, including Faculty Features.
  • The Chief Editor will coordinate all these activities, oversee and train the staff, and prepare a schedule of deadlines for each semester.
  • Successful candidates for this staff will have exceptional writing and editing skills, enthusiasm for the mission and vision of The Pulse, and excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.

Public Relations staff

  • Create signs, fliers, e-mails, etc. to publicize calls for papers, Pulse events, and publication dates.
  • Target and communicate with specific audiences of students and professors to solicit papers for publication.
  • Promote the Pulse Lecture Series in the spring semester.
  • Explore other means of raising awareness of The Pulse on campus and in the university community.
  • The Public Relations Director will coordinate all these activities, oversee and train the staff, and prepare a schedule of deadlines for each semester.
  • Successful candidates for this staff will have exceptional interpersonal and networking skills, creativity, and enthusiasm for the mission and vision of The Pulse.

Technical staff

  • Maintain and update website using the Baylor CMS.
  • Publish manuscripts on website for all editions.
  • Publish monthly faculty features on website.
  • Generate and execute ideas for web extras.
  • Typeset and prepare the graphic elements of the print journal.
  • The Technical Director will coordinate all these activities, oversee and train the staff, and prepare a schedule of deadlines for each semester.
  • Successful candidates for this staff will be able to manipulate the website, create pdf files, create design layouts, maintain enthusiasm for the mission and vision of The Pulse, and possess excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.

Artistic specialist

  • Aesthetically enhance documents, promotional materials, website design, and other Pulse materials.
  • Design The Pulse cover.
  • Serve as resource for both the Technical Director and Publicity Director as needed.
  • The successful candidate for this position will have experience and training in layout design and photography, will be proficient in a variety of software programs (including MS Office and Adobe Photoshop), and will have technical expertise working with common types of image files.

Secretary

  • Receive blind submissions; keep cover letters on file.
  • Pass submissions to editorial staff.
  • Communicate with authors as necessary.
  • Facilitate communication among staff members about all operations.
  • Take minutes at staff meetings.
  • Maintain files of all documents.
  • The successful candidate for this position will have exceptional organizational and interpersonal skills, and enthusiasm for the mission and vision of The Pulse.
