Baylor Profile

Baylor University is a private Christian university and a nationally ranked liberal arts institution. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching classifies Baylor as a research university with "high research activity." Baylor blends an international reputation for educational excellence with a faculty committed to teaching, scholarship and interdisciplinary research to produce outstanding graduates.

Baylor was chartered in 1845 by the Republic of Texas through the efforts of Baptist pioneers. Baylor is the oldest continually operating institution of higher learning in Texas and the largest Baptist university in the world. While much of the student body comes from Texas, the 735-acre campus in Waco welcomes students from all 50 states and 80 countries.

Baylor University's Baptist founders sought to establish an institution of higher learning dedicated to Christian principles, superior academics and a shared sense of community. With more than 14,000 students in 11 nationally recognized academic divisions, Baylor offers 146 baccalaureate degree programs, 75 master's degrees, one educational specialist degree, 28 doctoral degree programs, the master of divinity and doctor of ministry, and the juris doctor degree.

Waco is located in the heart of central Texas in a metropolitan area of 213,000 people. With a small-town feel, Waco's central location provides easy access to concerts, professional sporting events and shopping in Texas' larger cities, a weekend at the beach along the coast or a backpacking excursion in the Texas hill country. Waco offers activities for all interests - hiking and biking trails along the Brazos River, water sports on Lake Waco, 18 area museums, restaurants, and shopping.
