Waco Symphony Association's Generous Offer to Faculty & StaffAug. 20, 2012
At the beginning of this new academic year, it is an especially rewarding time to be at Baylor and to live in the wonderful community that surrounds and embraces us. With the Waco City Council's recent approval of a major gift for our new football stadium, the valued collaborative relationship we have long enjoyed with the Waco community has been reaffirmed!
I write today about another aspect of that collaboration that has endured for over fifty years. The Waco Symphony Orchestra, established in 1962, has long been a partner with Baylor, presenting beautiful music and bringing the world's greatest artists to our campus. The Symphony, conducted by Baylor's own Stephen Heyde, has provided professional experiences for generations of the most gifted of our School of Music students and faculty, many of whom perform with the Waco Symphony. Even the venue for the concerts, Waco Hall, was given by the citizens of the community to Baylor.
To express appreciation for our continuing collaboration, the Waco Symphony Association has generously offered a discount of $20 off the purchase of season tickets (which normally range from $75 - $200 per person) for any Baylor faculty or staff member. The five concerts scheduled this year are:
- Thursday, September 27: Olga Kern, pianist
- Thursday, November 8: Classical Mystery Tour (Celebrating the 45th Anniversary of the Beatles' album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.)
- Thursday, January 17: Carol Wincenc, flute
- Saturday, March 2: “Paris in the Roaring Twenties!” (All-Orchestral)
- Thursday, April 11: Jolente De Maeyer, violin
For more information, please visit www.wacosymphony.com or call the Waco Symphony office at (254) 754-0851. Alice and I hold season tickets and hope you will join us at these concerts!
In addition, I want to strongly encourage you to support our own magnificent Baylor Symphony Orchestra, also directed by the talented Stephen Heyde. These free concerts are held in Jones Hall in the McCrary Music Building at 7:30 p.m. on the following dates: Tuesday, October 2; Tuesday, November 13; Monday, February 4; Tuesday, March 5 and the President's Concert on Saturday, April 20, which this year will feature Beethoven's immortal Ninth Symphony with the Baylor A Cappella and Concert Choirs and featured alumni soloists. Do mark your calendars as you will not want to miss a single concert.
It was Chief Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes who once wrote, “Take a music bath once or twice a week for a few seasons, and you will find that it is to the soul what the water bath is to the body.”
Bring your whole family to enjoy these musical evenings. See you at the concerts!
