Baylor President and Chancellor Ken Starr, who served as U.S. Solicitor General from 1989-1993, was among the distinguished panelists who took part in a discussion “Supreme Advocate: Solicitors General Reflect on the Supreme Court As It Was, Is, and Will Be” at the American Bar Association meeting in Chicago. The article reports on the topics of discussion, including how the panelists became the U.S. government’s top courtroom lawyer, day-to-day duties of the office and maintaining independence, when formulating government positions.

Baylor President and Chancellor Ken Starr, who served as U.S. Solicitor General from 1989-1993, joined current and former solicitors general for a panel discussion on practicing before the Supreme Court Aug. 2 at the annual meeting of the American Bar Association. During the session, “Supreme Advocate: Solicitors General Reflect on the Supreme Court As It Was, Is, and Will Be,” Judge Starr explained his “call to service” and how he discovered that Thurgood Marshall — who served as solicitor general under President Lyndon B. Johnson before joining the Supreme Court — was right about the position. “It is the best legal job in the world,” Starr said.

The "tragic, global crisis in religious persecution, violence, and terrorism" requires America to greatly strengthen its strategies, a letter to top congressional leaders declares, signed by a diverse group of religious, academic and public policy figures, including Baylor President and Chancellor Ken Starr. The signers endorse H.R. 1150, named the "Frank R. Wolf International Religious Freedom Act of 2015" for the retired Virginia congressman and longtime champion of global religious freedom. Wolf now serves as The Jerry and Susie Wilson Chair in Religious Freedom at Baylor.
