Baylor Graduate Student Receives NRC Research Award

A Baylor University doctoral student has received a Research Associateship award from the National Research Council.
Jason Berninger, a doctoral student in Baylor's Institute of Biomedical Studies, received the award to study the effects and consequences of pharmaceuticals that may pollute our water supply. The award will allow Berninger to continue his research on the effects of pharmaceuticals on the environment, fully funded, for three years beginning in August after his graduation from Baylor.
"What I'm currently doing is a lot of prioritization. There's hundreds and hundreds of pharmaceuticals, and many of them connect to the environment. We don't know which ones actually do - but rather than study all of them, we pick only the ones that have the potential for the most hazardous effects," Berninger said. "I really feel proud that my achievement in my field has allowed me to get this award. It's a career maker."
Berninger will defend his dissertation June 27 and move to Minnesota to begin his research in August.
