The awards were firsts for Baylor University's student publications, whose designs were chosen out of 1,281 entries from 77 colleges and universities. "This has been a banner year for Baylor's student journalists," said Paul Carr, director of student publications. "This is the first time Baylor has earned national awards from this organization. Competing head to head with other major national universities, Baylor students brought home significant honors for both the newspaper and the yearbook." The Lariat won first place in the best of show category for "Redefining Gen Y," the newspaper's special insert which ran on Oct. 8. The insert included news and views of this generation of college students. Nick Dean, Lariat editor in chief, led the editorial and design team. Dean received a second newspaper design award for the Lariat in the photo page/spread category. His spread "Baylor Nation," printed in the March 30 issue of the Lariat, was awarded fifth place. Round Up won four yearbook design awards, including third place in the sports spread category for Rachel Moorman's "Strength in 3's." Moorman is Round Up editor in chief. The yearbook received fifth place for its cover design, "It all Began Here," and two honorable mentions, one for the student life spread "End of a Decade" and one for the individuals spread "Larger than Life." All three were designed by Ryan Brinson. by Katy McDowall, student newswriter, (254) 710-6805
