CASPER Seminar Features Dr. Zhimin Zhang

Baylor University's department of mathematics and Center for Astrophysics, Space Physics and Engineering Research (CASPER) will co-host a seminar that features Dr. Zhimin Zhang, professor of mathematics at Wayne State University in Detroit.

The seminar, which is free and open to the public, will discuss Zhang's lecture, "High Accuracy Eigenvalue Approximation," at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 27, in Sid Richardson room 207 on the Baylor campus. A reception will be held prior to the seminar in Sid Richardson room 318.

Zhang will discuss finite element approximations in the eigenvalue problem of the Laplace operator in physics and mathematics. He proposes a gradient recovery scheme to enhance the finite element solutions of the eigenvalue problems and says it is possible to produce more accurate numerical eigenvalues.

Zhang's theoretical results are numerically verified.

Zhang earned his doctorate in applied mathematics from the University of Maryland at College Park. His work has been published in Dynamics of Continuous, Discrete and Impulsive Systems; International Journal of Numerical Analysis & Modeling; SIAM Journal on Scientific Computing; and Journal of Computational Mathematics.
