Dr. Duane Brooks to Discuss the Doctrine of Salvation

Dr. Duane Brooks, senior pastor at Tallowood Baptist Church in Houston, will lecture on the topic of salvation, as he leads the 2010 Doctrinal Conference at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 3, in room 107 of George W. Truett Theological Seminary on the Baylor campus.

The Doctrinal Conference, first held in 1991, is an annual continuing education event for ministers. It is sponsored by the Department of Religion through Baylor's Ministry Guidance program in conjunction with the Waco Regional Baptist Network's monthly pastors' conference.

"This is becoming a topic of friendly debate, largely because there is so much religious churn, people switching denominations which questions what really makes a person a Christian," said Dr. Dennis Horton, associate professor of religion at Baylor. "Dr. Brooks will focus on key images throughout the Old Testament, but also talk about the core elements of what salvation means."

Brooks received a bachelor of arts and a doctorate of philosophy from Baylor University. He has been a member of the Texas Baptist Executive Board and the Human Welfare Board of the Baptist General Convention of Texas (BGCT). Brooks is currently Adjunct Professor of Preaching at Houston Baptist University and is serving on the Board of Regents at Baylor University.

"The primary goal of the conference is to help Christian leaders grow in their understanding of essential beliefs and see how these beliefs intersect with current life," Horton said.

The participants each year receive a study book to help them teach on the topic in their churches and small groups. This year's book, This Magnificent Salvation, was written by Brooks.

Registration for the conference begins at 9:45 a.m. in the Truett lobby. At 11:45 a.m., the conference will adjourn for lunch in the Piper Great Hall. Brooks also will be the featured speaker at the luncheon.
