Baylor Mourns Death of Nursing School Faculty Member

Dr. Jacquelin S. Neatherlin, professor and interim graduate program director at the Louise Herrington School of Nursing, passed away Jan. 7 after a long illness.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 13, at Royal Lane Baptist Church in Dallas, with Dr. David Matthews and Dr. Ray Vickery officiating. There will be no visitation. Friends are invited to sign the family guest book at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Blvd., Waco.

"Our hearts are heavy, but Jacque is probably already organizing the angelic choir," said Dr. Judy Lott, dean of the LHSON. "Dr. Neatherlin loved her students, the LHSON, Baylor University and the profession of nursing. She will be greatly missed."

Dr. Neatherlin was born March 14, 1955, in San Antonio. She graduated from Richfield High School in Waco in 1973 and earned her BSN from Baylor in 1977. She then went on to receive her MSN from the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, in 1980, and her Ph.D. from Texas Woman's University in 1993.

She was a teaching assistant at the University of Texas School of Nursing Health Science Center at San Antonio in 1980 and a clinical assistant professor of nursing at the University of Virginia Health Science Center in Charlottesville, Va., from 1989-90, before joining the Baylor nursing school faculty in 1991.

Certified in the field of neuroscience nursing, Dr. Neatherlin served as president of the American Association of Neuroscience Nurses. She also served two terms on the American Board of Neuroscience Nursing, and also as chair of the Test Development Committee for the American Board, which developed and managed the national certification examination for neuroscience nursing.

During her career, Dr. Neatherlin received numerous professional awards for her achievements, including Outstanding Alumna of the Waco Public Schools in February 2008, Outstanding Scholarship Award Recipient for the Louise Herrington School of Nursing in 2007, Certified Neuroscience RN of the Year by the American Board of Neuroscience Nursing in 2007 and Outstanding Baylor Professor in the area of scholarly activity in 2000.

Dr. Neatherlin also was a Distinguished Lecturer and a Virginia Henderson Fellow for Sigma Theta Tau International, the international honor society for nursing. She also served as president of the Eta Gamma Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau.

She is survived by her parents, Bruce and Dorothy Neatherlin of Waco; niece, Alicia Tomlinson of Connecticut; nephew, Matthew Neatherlin of Dallas; great-nephew, Kyle Tomlinson; great-niece, Brianna, of Connecticut; and many loving extended family members.
