Baylor Professor Finalist For Inspire Integrity Award

Dr. Marty Harvill, senior lecturer of biology at Baylor University, is one of 15 finalists for the Inspire Integrity Awards, a national award that recognizes faculty members who have had a significant impact on their students' lives and instilled a high degree of personal and academic integrity.

The awards are presented by the National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS).

"I was first surprised and then felt honored, because I know there many faculty members that are deserving of this type of award," Harvill said.

Harvill said he routinely discusses integrity with his students as it relates to university standards and the science discipline, in the context of science searching for truth. He also said he talks to his students about how as graduates of Baylor, their integrity will be a reflection on the university.

The 2008-09 Inspire Integrity Awards takes place in five regions throughout the United States. Undergraduate members of NSCS nominate faculty members in each region who inspire integrity through their classroom lectures, activities, and curriculum. Regional selection committees selected three finalists from each region. A national selection committee will name the runner-up and the national Inspire Integrity Awards' recipient on Feb. 9.

The national recipient will receive a personal stipend of $3,000 and an additional $2,000 contribution made in his or her name to the university's general scholarship fund. The runner-up will receive a $1,000 stipend and a $1,000 donation to his or her university's scholarship fund.
