Baylor University Interim President William D. Underwood has appointed Dr. Samuel W. "Dub" Oliver as interim vice president for student life, effective July 1.
Oliver, who currently serves as assistant vice president for student life, will succeed Dr. Eileen Hulme, who will join the faculty at Azusa Pacific University this summer as an associate professor in the doctoral program in higher education leadership. As interim vice president, Oliver will provide leadership for the student life division, including the areas of campus life, residence life, student development and university ministries.
"Dub Oliver has invested more than a decade in the lives of Baylor students during his service as director of student activities and dean for student development," Underwood said. "He is an enthusiastic and popular campus leader with intimate knowledge of the student culture, and he is committed to helping students develop all aspects of their lives from the moment they become a Baylor student to the day they graduate. Dub is well-prepared to carry on Baylor's strong commitment to Baylor 2012. I am pleased that he will assume the responsibility for leading the student life division of the university."
"Baylor has always been a very special place to me, and I am humbled by and excited about this opportunity to serve our community," Oliver said. "With all of us working together, Baylor will continue to be an incredible learning environment where students' lives are transformed."
Oliver earned his bachelor's degree in education from Baylor in 1987, then went on to earn a master's degree in educational psychology in 1991 and his doctorate in educational administration in 2001, both from Texas A&M University. He joined Baylor as director of student activities in 1992, and became dean for student development in 2001. As dean, he has been responsible for several areas of student life, including student activities (Greek life, multicultural activities, student union programming, student organizations, student government, spirit squads and ticket office), student involvement (leadership development, community service and new student programs) and campus recreation. On June 1, Oliver was named assistant vice president for student life.
"This is a wonderful step forward for the student life division and for Dub, who has provided more than 10 years of outstanding leadership for the university and for its students," Hulme said. "Dub and I worked together on numerous projects over the years, and I know that he has a tremendous heart for our students and cares deeply for this institution as a whole. With Dub, I know that I am leaving the student life division in very capable hands."
Oliver serves as a visiting professor in the Hankamer School of Business, where he teaches organizational leadership and change. He also teaches human resource development in higher education settings as an adjunct professor in the School of Education. He was honored as a Mortar Board Outstanding Professor in 1995 and 2001. In addition, he was recognized by the Baylor Alumni Association as an Outstanding Young Alumnus in 2004.
Oliver is married to Susie Oliver, a Baylor Alumna By Choice who teaches special education PE and coordinates the Special Olympics for Waco ISD. They have one daughter, Callie, 12. Oliver also currently serves as interim pastor of Canaan Baptist Church in Crawford.
