Baylor Welcomes Life Experience of Perryman Group CEO

Baylor University's department of mathematics in the College of Arts and Sciences is sponsoring the Third Annual Life Experiences in Mathematics Lecture, which is part of a series designed to bring former students to speak to undergraduates about how math has helped develop their current careers.
This year's speaker is Ray Perryman, Ph.D., Baylor '74, and he will present "Madmen and the Village Watchman: Mathematics in the Trenches of Economics and Public Policy" at 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 21, in the Kayser Auditorium of the Hankamer School of Business, 1428 S. Fifth St.
The lecture will explain how math is the driving force in economic decision-making and the formulation of key public initiatives. Perryman will use large-scale simulation models, general equilibrium models, game theory, input-out systems, and optimization techniques form an integral component of the daily ebb and flow of economic activity and policy, and these concepts and other examples will be used as real-world applications.
Perryman holds a bachelor of science in mathematics from Baylor and a Ph.D. in economics from Rice University. He has held multiple academic positions at Baylor and Southern Methodist University, and is the founder and president of The Perryman Group, an economic and financial analysis firm based in Waco. Perryman's numerous academic and trade articles have earned him international recognition as an economist. He has written several books such as "Survive & Conquer: Texas in the '80s," an account of the Texas economy during the 1980s, and "The Measurement of Monetary Policy," a treatise on Federal Reserve activity. He has won awards such as the "Nation's Outstanding Young Economist and Social Scientist," "Outstanding Young Person in the World in the Field of Economics and Business," one of the "Ten Outstanding Young Persons in the World" and "Outstanding Texas Leader of 1990."
