Texas Independent Film Network Film Series Will Continue With Austin Documentary

Baylor University's division of film and digital media will host a showing of the 2011 film "Slacker 2011" at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, in Room 101 of Castellaw Communications Center on the Baylor campus.

The event, which is free and open to the public, is this semester's second screening in the spring Texas Independent Film Network film series hosted by the division of film and digital media in the department of communication studies in the College of Arts and Sciences at Baylor.

"Slacker 2011" celebrates the 20th anniversary of Richard Linklater's "Slacker," which inspired a generation of American filmmakers by exploring the subculture of Austin, Texas, in a loose narrative with a variety of quirky characters. Twenty-four of Austin's top filmmakers banded together to update "Slacker" with their own perspectives on the city. "Slacker 2011" chronicles a day in Austin, presenting the city-dwellers, dragworms, proto-hipsters and locations that give the city its modern identity.

Following the screening, discussion will be held with special guest John Bryant, one of the film's directors. Bryant received a Texas Filmmakers Production Fund grant for his short film "LOVEolution" (2008). He also wrote, directed and produced "The Overbrook Brothers" (2009), which played at several festivals including SXSW, Woodstock and the Maryland Film Festival before it was picked up by IFC Films and later screened on the Sundance Channel.

The series will continue at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 1, in Room 101 of the Castellaw Communications Center with two documentaries, "Barbecue: A Texas Love Story" and "Something's Brewin' in Shiner."
