Leadership Lecture Series Welcomes Ghanan University Hospital Director for Lecture on Contemporary Social Issues
Dr. Fred Yaw Bio, director of the University Hospital at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana, will lecture on leadership in contemporary social issues at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, in Kayser Auditorium of the Hankamer School of Business on the Baylor University Campus.
The event, which is free and open to the public, is a part of the annual Leadership Lecture Series. Hosted by Baylor's Academy for Leader Development and Civic Engagement, the series is presented in the fall and spring to inspire students to get involved in today's society.
Born in Kumasi, Ghana, Yaw Bio received his general education at Osei Kyeretwie Secondary School in Kumasi from 1969-1974, before attending Prempeh College in Kumasi from 1974-1976. He received his bachelor's degree in human biology at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in 1980 and went on to receive bachelor's degrees in medicine and surgery there in 1983.
Afterwards, he interned at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi from 1983-1984 and then as a medical officer at the Suntresu Urban Health Centre. In 1987, he joined the Prestea Goldfields Limited as the second doctor at the mine's 100-bed hospital. He was promoted to senior medical officer in 1990.
That same year, he received his Certificate in Toxicology at the Institute of Occupational and Radiological Health in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, before becoming the sole senior medical officer in charge of the Prestea Goldsfield Health Services in 1992. Three years later, he was appointed as senior medical officer of the KNUST Hospital.
In 1998, Yaw Bio received his Master of Public Health at the University of Leeds in England. He earned his doctoral degree in occupational health at the University of Birmingham in England, in 2003.
He was appointed director of the University Health Services at KNUST in 2005. He also is part-time lecturer of occupational health in the Department of Community Health in the School of Medical Sciences at KNUST. He is a consultant and occupational health physician, a member of the Ghana Medical Association, a member of the International Commission on Occupational Health and a fellow of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons.

About the Academy for Leader Development and Civic Engagement
The Academy for Leader Development and Civic Engagement was established in 2004 by the Division of Student Life at Baylor University. Each semester the Academy devotes its lectures to one of the Academy's leadership concentrations: leadership and contemporary social issues; leadership in public life; leadership in the church; and leadership through private enterprise.
Presenters in the series articulate a critical need in the given area of focus, a description of leadership in the area and reflections on the role of Christian leadership in meeting that need. Upcoming speakers include author Wes Moore lecturing on leadership in public life at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17.
