Thousands of prospective students and their families are expected to visit and learn more about Baylor University on Saturday, Oct. 1, during the 2011 Fall Premiere hosted by Baylor Admission Services and its partners, including Campus Living and Learning, Student Activities, Baylor Air Force ROTC and Baylor's chapter of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity.
The event is a chance for visitors to see firsthand the opportunities available at Baylor, said Kelly Devoe, Baylor coordinator of visit events.
"Fall Premiere is an open house for prospective students and their families to come visit campus and see all the opportunities they would have here," Devoe said. "Sometimes they [students] don't want to come by themselves, so it's a family day to get a feel for the campus and meet students and faculty."
The all-day event will begin at 8 a.m. in the Ferrell Center, 1900 S. University Parks Dr., with a check-in and late registration period before Baylor President Ken Starr and Executive Vice President and Provost Elizabeth Davis present an opening session at 8:30 a.m.
After the opening session, guests are given the opportunity to attend two academic sessions between 9:30 and 11:45 a.m. Academic sessions are presented by Baylor professors from each field of study in the College of Arts and Sciences, Hankamer School of Business, School of Education, School of Engineering and Computer Sciences, School of Music, Louise Herrington School of Nursing and School of Social Work.
Between 11 a.m. and 3:15 p.m., visitors are free to explore campus and eat in one of the four residential restaurants. Prospective students are provided a meal ticket in their registration packets, and family members may purchase a ticket at the opening session or at the dining hall.
A few of the activities available to visitors are campus tours; a "Baylor Bear Fair" of student organizations on Founders Mall; residential hall open house; biology, chemistry and engineering and computer science lab tours; admissions, scholarships, financial aid and study abroad sessions; and self-guided tours around the Central Libraries and McLane Student Life Center.
Before departing, visitors will gather one last time at 3:15 p.m. in Waco Hall, 624 Speight Ave., for a closing session and final remarks.
Although premiere day is on Saturday, guests who arrive early are invited to attend the Brothers Under Christ (BYX) Island Party from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 30, on Fountain Mall of Baylor's campus. The free outdoor concert will feature musicians Rush of Fools, Jimmy Needham, The Advice and The Reliquies. Dr Pepper, Chick-fil-A, Baylor's "Be the Change" Missions and TOMS shoes will also be featured at the event.
Devoe not only encourages current students to engage with visitors during the BYX Island Party, but also on premiere day.
"Anyone is welcome to come on campus Saturday so it is busy and representative of students; it'd be great for them [current students] to come and mingle with guests as they are walking around campus," Devoe said.
Registration for Fall Premiere is free and prospective students are encouraged to register online at www.baylor.edu/visit/index.php?id=81950 or at the Ferrell Center on the morning of the event.
Baylor will also host a Spring Premiere on April 14, 2012. Registration will open Feb. 14, 2012.
