Alumni

There are many exciting developments in the political science department at Baylor, and we thought you might like to know more about them.  Students from throughout the United States and Canada have begun work in our new Ph.D. program approved by the Board of Regents in May 2005.  We recently received a $77,000 grant to support the study of America’s founding principles.  Four new senior faculty members have joined the department in the last few years to help us serve our expanding undergraduate and graduate programs.  Finally, we are renewing our efforts to keep our graduates involved with the department.

Both of our undergraduate majors, political science and international studies, are growing in size. Our Model UN Team made good showings in competitions at Harvard and at Georgetown, and our MA programs in Public Policy and Administration, and International Relations, continue to recruit excellent students. Our first class of doctoral students entered in the fall of 2005. This fall we already have a class of fifteen doctoral students enrolled in our program! Dr. Dwight Allman, our Director of Graduate Studies, reports that our entering Ph.D. students already present GRE scores that are among the best in Baylor’s doctoral programs. We believe that our program will train these students to be both first rate scholars and teachers.

The recently-received $77,000 grant for the study of America's founding principles will support graduate and post-doctoral fellowships. We hope to increase this fund in the future, to help introduce new courses and innovative ways of teaching American political thought, especially in smaller discussion sections of PSC 2302, American Constitutional Development. In the long-run, we are hoping to support lectures, conferences, and one or more visiting professors with these funds.

As graduates of the Baylor Political Science Department, you can help us build for the future.  We believe that the more we know about your experiences in the department and after graduation, the better we will be able to serve our current and future students. To that end, we would like to add information about our graduates to our website. News about your professional life and community involvement provides us with valuable information and offers current students role models for their future. Please fill out the Alumni Information Form, which you can find by clicking the link on the left of this page.

You can also have a major impact on the political science department through your financial contributions.  The donor for the program on America’s Founding Principles has agreed to consider renewing his $77,000 grant if we can demonstrate significant financial support from our alumni.  Every dollar you contribute to the program thus has the potential to bring in several more. You might prefer to contribute to the department’s general fund which makes possible student scholarships and awards, travel money for students, lectures, conferences and other activities necessary to build an outstanding program. You may make contributions on-line www1.baylor.edu/univdev under “excellence funds” on Baylor’s gift page, by writing Political Science (under departments) or America’s Founding Principles (under “other designations”).

We appreciate your help—not only for financial contributions, but for information about yourselves for our alumni page.
