Waco, Texas
Incorporated in 1856, Waco is a central Texas town that provides the perfect balance of rural and metropolitan. Located an hour and a half's drive away from both Austin and Dallas/Fort Worth, its ideal location affords a broad spectrum of opportunities. Waco is home to eighteen museums including the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and the Dr. Pepper museum. Waco actively supports a wonderful symphony orchestra, five theatres, and many heritage festivals. There are also several buildings of interest in Waco, including the Hippodrome theatre, the Masonic grand Lodge, and the Earle-Harrison House. Many historic buildings are maintained by the Historic Waco Foundation, a non-profit group that seeks to promote Waco history.
There are also opportunities for outdoor lovers to find their niche in Waco. The 416 acre Cameron Park provides nature enthusiasts a chance to enjoy Waco's lake-cooled climate, and ample sunshine. Cameron Park also houses Cameron Park Zoo, a relatively new zoo that is actively expanding to accommodate rare animal species, such as a new Blue-Eyed Black Lemur. Cameron Park also includes an extensive
array of mountain-bike trails. Situated directly west of Waco is Lake Waco, a primarily recreational lake that is the site of a 2.8 mile trail that provides a scenic view from the dam.
Waco also provides Baylor students, faculty, and staff plenty of opportunities for entertainment. Waco has recently restored its warehouse district, providing opportunities for fine dining and shopping. Also, Waco has three cinemas, which cater to a variety of tastes. For those who love to shop, there is Richland Mall, a mall which provides an affordable, pleasant shopping environment.
