Dr. Nathan Carson accepts a position at Fresno Pacific

June 18, 2013

Dr. Michael Beaty, chair of the department of philosophy, is pleased to announce that Dr. Nathan Carson has accepted a new position at Fresno Pacific University in Fresno, California, beginning in August, 2013. Nathan has been appointed Assistant Professor of Philosophy in the School of Humanities, Religion, and Social Sciences, and will assume the role of Philosophy Program Director also.

According to Dr. Carson, he will be the only philosopher on the faculty. He is charged with resurrecting a philosophy program that has fallen into disrepair over the last 5 years, in the absence of a full time philosophy faculty member. Carson comments, "This is an exciting no less than daunting task, but I look forward to shaping, improving and growing the program as it stands. The school retains a general educational requirement for introduction to philosophy, so I hope to connect well with students at that level, and augment the program from there. I also hope to establish a thriving Philosophy Club, annual or semi-annual topical symposia with visiting philosophers, and a service learning plan that allows for creative student engagement in the Fresno community."

Fresno Pacific is a liberal arts university in the Mennonite Brethren tradition that is committed to its rich Christian heritage and its mission in higher education in the free-church tradition. Fresno Pacific is also deeply involved in the Fresno community in a variety of important ways, but especially via a business forum and numerous church connections.

Carson adds, "I am thankful for this position, and remain grateful to my friends, colleagues and faculty mentors in the Baylor University Philosophy Department for their investment in my life as a young scholar and philosopher. I will miss you all a great deal, but I hope to represent Baylor well at Fresno Pacific University!"
