Tutoring Center Helps Students Get the Grade
Through Baylor's Success Center Tutoring Program, housed within the Paul L. Foster Success Center, students can get the help they need to make the most of their education. In the program, students dive into their coursework with tutors--peers who have excelled in a specific area and maintain an overall GPA of 3.5 or higher.
"Tutoring gives you a stronger and better understanding of the material," Steven Richard, academic support advisor for tutoring, said. "For students, it's sometimes easier to understand or less intimidating to talk to another student about the course."
Tutors utilize professional teaching methods and strategies to identify a student's current level of understanding and to increase that level as the semester continues. Beyond encouraging academic growth, tutors also can offer guidance about time management, reading strategies, memorization and test anxiety.
"The tutors come alongside students and help them learn what it takes to succeed," Success Center Tutor Katie Burns said. "Whether its learning a concept or learning how to study, the tutors are always there to help."
It's never too late for students to receive help. A student can benefit from the center's assistance before their first test or before their final exam. By taking advantage of the Tutoring Center, students gain a deeper understanding of their coursework, raising their grades and preparing them for future classes in their fields.
To make the most out of tutoring sessions, students need to be prepared to engage in the material. For each session, students should bring supplies such as their notes, handouts and textbooks, as well as questions they have about the material. The Tutoring Center strives to treat all students with respect, and students can trust that all topics covered in tutoring sessions will remain confidential.
The Tutoring Center is located on the lower level in the east wing of the Sid Richardson Building and is open from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Appointments can be made through Bearweb, but the Tutoring Center also welcomes walk-in appointments.
