E-NEWSLETTER OF THE BAYLOR PARENTS NETWORK SEPT. 12, 2013
NewJudypic

Dear Parents,

As the Baylor University campus once again fills with students, we share in the excitement and energy that a new school year brings. Within each student is untold potential and promise to accomplish great things as they pursue their calling.

As your personal link to Baylor, the Baylor Parents Network is here to strengthen your relationship to the University and connect you to the people and programs that can help you and your student make the most of their personal Baylor experience.

One of those resources is the Paul L. Foster Success Center. The Paul L. Foster Success Center exists to help your student become engaged in the academic community and fulfill his or her personal goals at Baylor.

We are pleased to bring you this special student success edition of Perspectives. These comprehensive offerings can help your student attain academic success, make the most of their Baylor experience, and set and achieve goals -- in short, our goal is for students to thrive while here and graduate with an emboldened sense of who they are and where they are going.

As you read through this edition, feel free to contact us with questions you may have. Finally, encourage your student to visit the Paul L. Foster Success Center early in the semester to learn more and enhance their time at Baylor.

We wish you and your student a happy and successful year.

Baylor University's Paul L. Foster Success Center offers many resources to help students succeed. And students certainly come to the Success Center for help when they’re in trouble. But some also take advantage of Success Center resources before real trouble arrives. Not surprisingly, students often thrive and avoid problems when they plan and take proactive steps at the beginning of the semester.

When is the time to ask for help? Why not encourage your student to take advantage of all that is available right now?

Study Skills

“Have you done your homework?” You have likely asked your student this question many times. And you want your student to heed the lessons you taught them, even though you aren’t here at Baylor to remind them on a daily basis. Baylor University offers resources to each student to help them build a foundation of positive habits, no matter where they are in their college experience.

The Paul L. Foster Success Center at Baylor University is here to help each Baylor student thrive. You can encourage your student to take advantage of the breadth of the Success Center’s offerings, like tutoring, mentoring and other guidance that will help them plan what they want to achieve and how to get there.

Baylor University offers no shortage of fun and enriching activities and organizations for student involvement. From professional and cultural opportunities, sports, music, Greek life and even just-plain-fun activities like Dia Del Oso, a student can find his or her calendar filling up pretty quickly. That’s not even taking into account friends, jobs, internships and planning for the future. And, in the midst of all that Baylor has to offer, we know that academics must remain front and center in the choices your student makes each and every day.

Being a college student can be enjoyable, but it can also be challenging. Students can lose sight of what they have to do in the light of what they want to do. How can your student find the right balance to achieve academic success? Is an academic mentor right for your child? Resource Coordinator Trish Baum has answers.

The right major -- suited to your student's passion and abilities -- is critical. It can save credit hours, time, and stress down the line. Is your student taking advantage of the full set of tools in the Major and Career Exploration area of the Paul L. Foster Success Center, and utilizing the expertise of the expertise of his or her academic advisor?

A clear-eyed view of their desires, strengths and weaknesses can ensure that your student pursues the right major (and minor) with passion and clarity.
