Transportation in a Zip!

Does this sound familiar:
"I can't find anywhere to park."
"I can't find a ride."
"I can't afford to have a car, but I need a way to get around."

Chances are, many of you hear this from your student on a regular basis. It's no secret that transportation on college campuses can be tricky. Whether battling other students for parking spots and struggling with car payments or constantly asking for rides and feeling stuck on campus, students with and without cars experience frustration.

But with Baylor's new Zipcars, things are changing. Not only does Zipcar provide the ability to rent cars at any time, but it also allows students who don't own cars an easy and affordable way to zip around a busy college campus or even make a quick trip for the weekend.

What is Zipcar?

  • Zipcar is the world's largest car sharing program, which rents cars to its members including individuals, businesses and universities.
  • Zipcar allows students, faculty and staff to reserve cars 24/7 and rent them for a few hours or a few days at a time.
  • Zipcar offers students the convenience of having reliable transportation without owning a car.

Matt Penney, director of Parking and Transportation Services at Baylor, said Zipcar represents options.

"Zipcar fills the gap for students when they don't want to bring a car to campus, when their car is in the shop or when they don't want to use their car to drive home for the weekend," Penney said. "It's amazing to see parents from larger cities light up and excitedly ask questions when they hear about the new program."

What are the features?

  • Zipcars are easily accessible with 24/7 online and mobile reservations available.
  • The rental fee includes gas, insurance and 180-mile credit per day.
  • Members get access to reserved parking spots on Baylor campus.

What are the rates?

  • Renting a Zipcar requires signing up for an annual membership at $35 per year. However, each member earns the fee back with a $35 credit for driving time.
  • Rental rates are $8 per hour or $66 per day.
  • A small fee is incurred when additional miles are used.

Penney said Baylor representatives have been talking with Zipcar for the past couple of years on how the concept could fit Baylor students, and, so far, the reaction has been tremendous.

"It seems we've caught the attention of every news service in the area," Penney said. "We have numerous members already signed up for the service, and we continue to sign up at least one new member every day."
