Baylor Parents Stand in the Gap
Naturally, Melissa and Chris Herndon are grateful that their two children have never required emergency assistance during their years at Baylor. But, instead of simply sitting back with a sigh of relief, they are passing on their blessings.
What if one of our own was in need? It's a riveting question--one that Chris and Melissa have considered. And it has prompted them to bridge the gap for other Baylor families by both volunteering at
Baylor Parents League events and supporting funds such as the Parents League Endowed Scholarship Fund and the Student Emergency Fund.
Neither Chris nor Melissa are Baylor alums, but the rich and unique experiences that their children, Mary Ellen (BS '08) and Price, a junior, have gained as Baylor Bears have stirred a thankful response in both of their hearts.
"College is a life experience that can't be matched in any other way, and Baylor is such a special place," Melissa said about the importance of scholarship funds. "That's why we want to help any student who's struggling but wants to be there--every little bit helps."
While the Parents League Endowed Scholarship Fund was the first route the couple used to support Parents League, a challenging situation in the life of a friend's Baylor student highlighted the importance of the Student Emergency Fund.
"You never know what's going to happen in life, and, if a family or a student has an emergency, it's vital for them to be able to get help they need," Melissa said. "We have heard about such wonderful things that the Student Emergency Fund has done to provide assistance."
"From the time my daughter entered college as a freshman, the Parents League has been a wonderful, personal arm of Baylor. From the top-down, we've experienced people who care."
