Baylor Nursing Students Given Space for Success

Baylor Nursing Team Serves in Ethiopia and Uganda

The journey from a remote Ethiopian village was not easy for the woman pregnant with twins and going into labor. Making matters more difficult was her mode of transportation - being carried by several men for six hours. The woman arrived at the medical clinic frightened and bleeding, but was assisted by a group of students from Baylor University's Louise Herrington School of Nursing who were ready to help.

With Baylor University's Louise Herrington School of Nursing in Dallas located nearly 100 miles from Baylor's main Waco campus, providing a high speed optical network for education and research proved to be a challenge for Baylor and its nursing school. Baylor Nursing School Accreditation Extended; Students Wait-Listed

Undergraduate and master's nursing accreditation at Baylor University's Louise Herrington School of Nursing has been extended by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, said Dr. Judy Wright Lott, dean of the School of Nursing. Baylor's School of Nursing is one of a few schools given ten-year accreditation after meeting rigorous requirements. These schools file a continuous improvement progress report at the five-year point, and Baylor has been notified that its programs continue to meet all accreditation requirements. Nursing schools generally meet the board once every five years.

Nursing School's Graduate Director To Retire In May 2005

Dr. Pauline Johnson, director of graduate programs at Baylor University's Louise Herrington School of Nursing, will retire in May 2005 after 15 years of guiding graduate studies in the school. Johnson came to Baylor in 1990 when the school began a master's program with a degree in patient care management, now called the advanced nursing leadership track.

Baylor Medical Mission Team To Serve AIDS Orphans In Uganda March 7-31

As spring breaks go, students at Baylor University's Louise Herrington School of Nursing will probably travel the farthest, stay the longest, return the most exhausted and possibly even change the world the most. The four graduate students, already licensed RNs, and their faculty sponsor will fly on March 7 to Uganda, located in sub-Saharan Africa, to give health care to two children's homes, a city orphanage in Kampala and a rural home in nearby Rakai. The capstone medical mission trip for the master's family nurse practitioner (FNP) degree provides a chance for the nurses to set up clinics, dispense medicines, test the children for HIV and dispense hygiene supplies, such as soap and toothbrushes, to the homes.

Nursing School Director Of Student Services to Attend War College

Steve Chisolm, director of student services at Baylor University's Louise Herrington School of Nursing, will take a year's leave of absence from Baylor beginning in July 2005 to pursue Air Force training. Chisolm has served at the nursing school for 10 years, the last two as director of student services. He has also served in the Air National Guard for 29 years, rising from the rank of airman to lieutenant colonel.
