Susan Houston joined the Baylor Health Care System as Director of Nursing Research in January 2010 and is responsible for supporting staff in the conduction of nursing research across 14 facilities. A graduate of University of Southern Mississippi, Dr. Houston earned her PhD from Texas Women's University and her Masters degree in nursing from the Medical College of Georgia. Dr. Houston holds a joint faculty appointment at Baylor University's Louise Harrington School of Nursing.
For the past 30 years, Dr. Houston has served in clinical practice, leadership, consultation and academic positions. She has an international and national reputation regarding outcomes management, quality enhancement and outcomes research. She has more than 70 referred publications and 48 funded research studies. The majority of these scholarly activities have focused on interdisciplinary practice patterns and related quality, patient and financial outcomes. Specifically funded studies have focused on reducing infection, early feeding protocols, transfusion practices, and nurse-physician communication. She is a member of, and has served in leadership positions for Sigma Theta Tau (Honor Society of Nursing), American Nurses Association, Southern Nursing Research Society, and was inducted in the American Academy of Nursing in 2001. She is certified in advanced nursing administration and epidemiology.
