nursing shortage, a more realistic
portrayal of nursing in the media, and the recognition of the value of a college education. There are many excellent schools, colleges, and universities that offer nursing education programs. The choice of the nursing program is important because it will have a life-long impact not only on one's nursing education and career, but on one's life.
Baylor University is the oldest Baptist university in the world. The Louise Herrington School of Nursing undergraduate and graduate programs have an outstanding reputation based on excellent faculty, curriculum, and students. Baylor nurses are leaders at hospitals, universities, and other health care agencies. As a faith-based university, the nursing education you will receive at Baylor University is based upon the philosophy that nursing is a profession and a ministry. The faculty and administration are deeply committed to the success of students, academically and personally. A strong faith-based student ministry program is in place to facilitate student's spiritual needs, as well as providing opportunities for fellowship with other students, faculty, and staff of the LHSON. Interested students have opportunities to participate in mission activities with faculty and staff of the school.
The undergraduate program of the Louise Herrington School of Nursing awards the Bachelor Science in Nursing (BSN). Approximately 275 students are enrolled in the BSN program. The program of study consists of 131 semester hours of credit. There are 66 semester hours of prerequisites, which may be taken on the Baylor-Waco campus or at other accredited colleges and universities.
The upper-level (junior and senior years) of the program of study consists of 65 semester hours. The upper division courses are taken on the Dallas campus. The program (pre-nursing and nursing) is designed to be completed in four years (eight academic semesters). All prerequisite courses must be completed prior to the beginning of the upper division major in Dallas. Students are admitted to the nursing major in Dallas each fall and spring semester.
School of Nursing students study with faculty who all are Registered Nurses and hold graduate degrees. Instructor-supervised clinical experiences are at the world-renowned Baylor University Medical Center and at other outstanding health care facilities throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. Upon graduation, students are eligible to take the NCLEX for licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN).
Baylor's Baccalaureate and Master's Nursing Degree Programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The Louise Herrington School of Nursing is a member of the Southern Regional Education Board Council on Nursing Education.
