Being a Welcome Week Leader

Our goal at Welcome Week is to warmly welcome, energize, unify, and validate all new students as they begin their Baylor experience. Welcome Week is all about new students! Our hope is that new students will begin to feel a real sense of belonging to the Baylor community after experiencing Welcome Week!

Commitment

We recognize and acknowledge that Welcome Week is a very full week especially for our student leaders. Our desire is to equip each of you with the tools that you need to be an effective and relational student leader for the week. In a desire to provide you with what you can expect from Welcome Week training, the following tentative schedule is provided.

Training

Staff members must attend the full duration of Welcome Week training, including:

Tuesday, April 23 - Spring Evening Training
Monday, August 18 - Afternoon/Evening
Tuesday, August 19 - Morning/Afternoon
Wednesday, August 20 - Morning/Afternoon


Welcome Week is an intense week. Beginning with early morning move-in on Thursday, August 21 to the completion of the week at candlelight, we will call on you to lead, love, and live Welcome Week! We appreciate our staff and are committed to taking care of you. At the same time, please know that we expect all of our staff to carry a positive attitude and be willing to go above and beyond the call of duty for the week. Members are expected to attend all scheduled activities for their duration. Additionally, all Welcome Week staff may be called upon to assist in setting up and/or tearing down Welcome Week events.

The following expectations have been implemented to create a better overall experience for all participants, and reflect the desires and requests of previous student and staff participants. Although some of these expectations reflect Baylor University's code of conduct requirements, many are simply added to respect the wishes of all participants.

Beginning Monday, August 18 at 1:00pm, all volunteers for Welcome Week 2014 become official Welcome Week Staff members and continue to be official staff members for 24 hours a day until Sunday, August 24, at 12:00am. Staff members are expected to be positive representatives for the University before, after, and during the official commitment.

Leadership Opportunities

Small Group Leader

Small Group Leaders will co-facilitate a group of 18 to 24 new students and model building healthy relationships while encouraging students in their holistic development, including: pursuing academic excellence, spiritual growth, relationship building, and a healthy lifestyle. Leaders will accompany new students to planned local activities to help introduce the new students to Baylor and Waco.

Residence Hall Captain

Residence Hall Captains are the first point of contact for new students and their families when they arrive on campus. Serving as liaisons between NSP and CL&L, RHCs are integral to a smooth transition to Baylor for new students and their families.

Task Force

Task Force Members play a crucial role in the success of Welcome Week by providing logistical management and support for the week's events. The TF handles important tasks around campus creating an atmosphere of excellence and enthusiasm for Welcome Week.

Other Expectations

Student Activities Policy and Procedure

Welcome Week is a University-Wide event and is THE ONLY scheduled event for students from August 20-24, 2014. All other student events are not permitted unless otherwise approved by the Department of Student Activities. As representatives of the University, participating as student leaders in a University-Wide event, Welcome Week leaders will not ENDORSE, ATTEND, or PARTICIPATE in any student events unrelated to Welcome Week. Attendance and/or participation in any student events planned apart from Welcome Week (i.e. organizational mixers, fraternity or sorority parties, off-campus events, etc.) is prohibited.

Language and Other Messaging

As a Welcome Week leader, you will be serving as an ambassador of Baylor. As a result, we ask that you conduct yourself in a manner that is appropriate. Specifically, your words and actions should reflect a positive and encouraging tone. The use of inappropriate slang words, racial slurs, derogatory comments, etc., are not permitted during Welcome Week. Additionally, promoting or prescribing organizational involvement , or using Welcome Week as a recruitment tool will not be tolerated. We ask that leaders refrain from wearing clothing that would promote any organization(s).


Alcohol and Illegal Drugs

For numerous and obvious reasons, the use of alcohol and/or illegal drugs is not permitted at any time (24 hours a day) during the volunteer week of August 20-24, 2014


Tobacco products

Upon considering the health risks to all participants, the presence/use of tobacco products is not allowed at any time.


Clothing

During Welcome Week, we will provide staff t-shirts that are to be worn during the week. When considering which shorts/pant/skirts and shoes to wear, please keep in mind the scheduled Welcome Week activities.
