DescriptionIn a recently-published book, Professor Roeber reconstructed fierce internal debates among Protestants on three continents about how to define and defend marriage in its relationship between spouses, political authority, and various understandings of â€Å“the church." In his talk, he will summarize briefly the argument of the book and respond to various critiques of his argument that have appeared over the past year, primarily from Protestant historians and theologians. In conclusion, he will offer some observations about the likely future trajectory of such debates.

A.G. Roeber is Professor of Early Modern History & Religious Studies at Penn State University. He is the author of numerous books and essays, most recently, Hopes for Better Spouses: Protestant Marriage and Church Renewal in Early Modern Europe, India, and North America (2013)
